Take money from people and give it to the party: The Fact-checking industry exposed

Fact-checking, a term that has rapidly become a buzzword in contemporary discourse, essentially involves verifying the truth and accuracy of public information. This activity, initially the responsibility of journalists and news outlets, has now burgeoned into a full-blown industry where self-appointed fact-checkers reign supreme.

Let’s analyze the new cartel of fact checking and how spreading misinformation is a lucrative business for them.

“Majority of funds for Democrats”

On June 13th, a news report emerged from the United States that raised eyebrows within international circles. The report alleged that nearly 100% of monetary contributions by fact-checkers were directed towards the Democrats. A detailed study was cited which dissected political donations across the last four election cycles. The findings were indeed alarming: a massive $22,580 out of a total $22,683 in political donations were funnelled towards the Democrats. Only a minuscule amount, through three separate donations, went to the Republicans. This report suggested a potentially entrenched liberal bias within the supposedly objective fact-checking industry.

Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and owner of Twitter, took to his platform to voice his opinion on this matter. He concurred with the report’s claims, asserting that all fact-checkers were indeed biased. This sentiment wasn’t confined to Musk. In December 2021, a landmark event unfolded: Facebook, the social media giant, admitted during a lawsuit hearing that its much-touted “fact-checks” were merely “opinions”. This confession was made during a lawsuit initiated by celebrated journalist John Stossel, which cast a glaring spotlight on the exaggerated campaign against alleged “misinformation” waged by left-liberal factions.

The case of Indian “Fact Checkers”

If such a disconcerting scenario exists in the USA, one cannot help but speculate about the situation in other countries. In India, for instance, a highly controversial figure, Mohammad Zubair, has been associated with multiple charges, including money laundering and cyber bullying. Upon his arrest, Zubair confessed that his company, Alt News, had indeed received foreign funding, contradicting his previous assertions to the contrary.

But the allegations against Zubair and his associate, Pratik Sinha, don’t stop there. The duo allegedly fabricated a story about their nomination for the highly prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. This purportedly false claim, abetted by NDTV and Time Magazine, helped them amass over 24 lakh rupees in donations. These funds were reportedly channeled into cyber bullying activities, making life unbearable for individuals like Nupur Sharma.

Misinformation cannot be the new cool!

These incidents underscore the critical issue at hand: the credibility and impartiality of fact-checkers is increasingly coming under scrutiny, especially when they are perceived as potential tools in a larger political power play. The public, ever eager to consume bite-sized news, often reads headlines and forms judgments without delving deeper into the story or cross-checking the information. This societal proclivity for quick and easy information consumption has been exploited by those who wear self-proclaimed labels and titles without undergoing rigorous scrutiny.

While Fact-checking is an indispensable tool in the battle against the spread of misinformation, it is crucial to ensure that it is not abused for personal, political, or monetary gains. Unbiased, transparent, and rigorous fact-checking is more crucial now than ever. As we continue to navigate the post-truth era, it is of paramount importance that we keep the fact-checking industry accountable, ensuring it fulfills its essential mandate: to verify and uphold the truth, free from any form of bias or external influence
