A few days ago, the wrestlers, who had been staging protests demanding the arrest of ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, agreed to meet Amit Shah. Post this encounter, all the three prominent wrestlers—Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat—have surprisingly decided to rejoin their positions as Gazetted Railway Officers.
While the wrestlers have not officially withdrawn their protests, they have conceded to resuming their jobs. The change of tone is also noteworthy, with the earlier calls of throwing everything to the wind now toning down to calls of “Satyagraha”. Likewise, IOA President, and ex-athlete PT Usha has also assured of WFI Elections at the earliest.
The ‘Headless’ Opposition
This shift of gear is a major setback for the opposition, which had seemingly found a strong front in the intensifying protests. But alas, it seems like the ‘sons of the soil’, a translation of “Mati ke Lal”, have realised that politics is not their arena!
If the wrestlers were committed to their protest, they would not have participated in the spectacle of throwing their medals at Haridwar, only to then pass them over to the Tikait brothers. This act has left many to question the intent and the direction of the protest.
In another surprising turn of events, one of the main backers of the protest, Deepender Hooda, reportedly attempting to try his luck at WFI, has left for the USA. The absence of Hooda, a significant backer of the movement, leaves the protest in a questionable state.
The entire episode of wrestlers protests being doused post a meeting with Amit Shah has become a source of frustration for opposition politicians. This absurd politicisation has left them bereft of any substantial agenda against Prime Minister Modi and his establishment for the impending 2024 elections.
