Carbon dating: The truth of Gyanvapi shall be out soon, courtesy Allahabad HC

Gyanvapi carbon dating: “Ayodhya to Jhanki Hai, Kashi Mathura Baaki Hai”. Whoever coined this slogan must be grinning wide today, as the road to the restoration of the original Kashi Vishwanath complex, currently known as Gyanvapi complex has become easier.

Gyanvapi: Allahabad HC gives nod to carbon dating

In a remarkable verdict given a few days back, the Allahabad HC has given their nod to the official carbon dating survey of the Shivalingam in the Gyanvapi complex. This decision was taken after consulting various officials, including the archaeological officers from the Archaeological Survey of India.

For those unknown, the Gyanvapi complex has been as contentious an issue as the Ram Janmbhoomi Kshetra at Ayodhya. While the Islamists assert their claim over the same, they do accept that the structure was originally a royal structure, which housed the Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlingam.

Besides, unlike other Islamists, the Mughals under Aurangzeb had done a really horrible job while demolishing the premises. But that’s for another day.

Varanasi court had rejected the demand

Now The Masjid Committee calls this Shivling a fountain and maintains that it was built by the Mughals. However, having none of this, Allahabad High Court has asked Shivling to get carbon dating done.

But why did Allahabad HC had to pronounce the verdict of carbon dating? The carbon dating would have begun in July 2022 itself, had it not been for the local court’s verdict, that denied the petitioners the right to the same, citing the status quo as issued by the Supreme Court.

Now reversing the verdict, Allahabad High Court has accepted the petition filed for carbon dating and scientific survey of Shivling found during the survey in Gyanvapi campus. Accepting the petition, the High Court ordered the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct carbon dating without causing any damage to the Shivling, to which the ASI officers nodded in unison.

The road ahead

Before pronouncing their verdict in the favour of the devotees of Kashi Vishwanath, The High Court had asked advocate Manoj Kumar Singh, appearing for the Government of India, whether carbon dating could be done without damaging the Shivling, as it would reveal the age of the Shivling. On this, the ASI said that carbon dating of Shivling can be done without any damage. Following this, the Allahabad High Court officially gave their nod to the same.

During the survey conducted by the local court, an ancient Shivling was found on 16 May 2022 during the survey in Gyanvapi campus. A case was filed in the district court of Varanasi regarding the demand of ASI to conduct a scientific survey of this Shivling. However, the court rejected it on 14 October 2022, following which this decision was challenged in the High Court.

Interestingly, almost a week ago, the Allahabad High Court also ordered a fresh hearing over the survey of Shri Krishna Janmbhoomi complex in Mathura, maintaining that it is not the local court’s job to give a prejudiced opinion while pronouncing the official verdict. So long story short, the road to restoring the pride of Kashi and Mathura with the restoration of the abodes of Bhagwan Shiva and Bhagwan Krishna has officially begun, and in style.
