’If your timeline is flooded by any of such stories, don’t be surprised. To paraphrase a dialogue from Lakshya in the context of the much talked about Khans, ‘Sir, they’re the Khans of Bollywood. They will come back, don’t relax!’
There’s always a reason for everything
As mentioned in the eponymous classic, ‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘Long story short, we hear a story too good to be true, it ain’t!’ Ever wondered how ‘Pathaan’ has worked wonders, with almost negligible attendance in the theaters? Ever thought, how despite such scathing reviews, the Siddharth Anand flick managed to do what ‘Brahmastra’ with excessive PR couldn’t?

Well, the story is eerily the same for ‘Kisi ka Bhai, Kisi ka Jaan’. The movie has been panned left right and center by both the critics, as well as the audience. The almost two and a half hour long cringefest only strengthens the belief of several cinemagoers to not let the likes of Farhad Samji ruin the legacy of ‘Hera Pheri’. But that’s for another day.
The principal reason for which the ‘resurrection of Khans’ in Bollywood is not too only obvious, but also weird, is the nature of both movies, and their staggering revenue. From the looks of it, ‘Pathaan’, the poster boy for YRF Spy Universe, was anything but even a simple entertainer, forget it being an espionage flick. However, in its opening weekend, the film amassed a total of some 281 crores, making others wonder whether it would surpass even the entire GDP of European Union in a week or what. Likewise, ‘Kisi ka Bhai, Kisi Ki Jaan’, made on a whopping amount of 150 crores, has earned some 78 crores in the opening weekend, and a significant 120 crores plus worldwide!
Ever heard of mass circuits?
What does this mean? On paper, the ailing Bollywood, written off by many by the end of 2022, has bounced back in style, and the Bollywood industry is nothing without the Khans?
But is it apparently as easy as adding two and two? Apparently not. Going by the dynamics of movies post COVID, for a movie to work this well, it needs to work superbly, in both the multiplexes as well as the single screen circuits, the actual mass.

However, on a closer look, not everything is well with ‘Kisi ka Bhai, Kisi ki Jaan’. The movie registered an average opening of Rs. 15.83 crores, just some notches above Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’, a rom com made on a more modest scale than the former. If one has a simple dry run of the bookings on platforms like PayTM or BookMyShow, one will find that forget packed houses, ‘Kisi ka Bhai Kisi ka Jaan’ has struggled to fill even half the seats as claimed. This, when a film like ‘Bholaa’ somehow managed to recover the costs despite the scathing criticism from the so called critics, and we haven’t begun on the curious case of Pathaan yet.

You know, in 2017, when ‘Baahubali’ released the much awaited second installment, the crowd went bonkers. Forget the metros, even tier 2 cities like Gaya, Gonda, Guntur, Pune, Ahmednagar, Surat etc. flocked to the theaters, making ‘Baahubali’ the highest grossing Indian film of all time, with a worldwide collection of almost 2000 crore rupees, and almost 1400 crores plus collection from just India itself.
A couple of months later, an Indian movie released in a nation, and overrode ‘Baahubali’ within a span of weeks, not even months, to become the highest grossing Indian film ever, when its lifetime India collection was not more than 400 crores. This was the much talked about ‘Dangal’, starring Aamir Khan in the lead role. Coincidence? I think not.

In a way, whether it is Pathaan, or Kisi ka Bhai Kisi ka Jaan, the message is clear: As long as the last ounce of strength is remaining, there won’t be a stone left unturned to prove that it is the Khans who call the shots, even as their cheeks are sagging, their fortunes are dwindling, and their acting.
