Mumbai Mumbadevi Temple – Guide
Mumbadevi Temple is a famous and ancient temple located in the centre of Zaveri Bazaar in the city of Mumbai. This temple dedicated to Mumbadevi remains a centre of faith for the people of Mumbai, while Mumba Devi is specially worshiped by the Koli fishermen of Mumbai, who consider her as their goddess and their protector. The temple complex houses idols of Hindu deities Ganesha, Hanuman and Goddess Annapurna along with Mumbadevi.
History of this Temple
The history of Mumbadevi temple, is that this temple is counted among the oldest temples of Mumbai. The Mumbadevi temple was built in the year 1675 at Bori Bunder. After that this temple was renovated by British in 1737 by shifting it from Bori Bunder to Zaveri Bazaar. Since ancient times Koli fishermen and Dravidians had prayed to Mumbadevi in this temple and are still worshiped by them in this temple.
According to a history, Mumba Devi is believed to be the eight-armed goddess who was sent by ‘Lord Brahma’ to kill an evil demon who was known as ‘Mumbarka’, who was terrorizing the local people . After praying to Lord Brahma, Goddess Mumba comes to earth and defeats the evil demon Mumbaraka, after which Mumbaraka realizes his mistake and falls on his knees and apologizes to the goddess for his name. Thus the goddess accedes to his request after which she came to be known as Mumba Devi.

Mumbai Mumbadevi Temple opens at 6:30 AM in the morning and close at 10:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 8:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 8:30 PM in the evening.
