Hashtag inventor Chris Messina quits Twitter. Why?

In 2007, Messina came up with the idea of introducing hashtags.

Chris Messina, the inventor of hashtags, has announced that he is quitting Twitter, although his decision is not related to the revocation of his blue tick. Instead, he is leaving because of his dissatisfaction with the way Twitter has handled the whole verification situation. Chris Messina expressed his disappointment with lack of dignity of Twitter and consideration over the past six months leading up to the badge. His Twitter account is now set to private.

In 2007, Chris Messina came up with the idea of introducing hashtags, which allow users to search for topics by using a hash symbol (#). Hashtags became quite popular on various social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The hashtag allows a user to look for a topic easily and also helps with increasing the reach of the post. Now, Twitter has a dedicated box where trending hashtags are displayed in real-time.

Explaining hashtags

Hashtags are an essential part of social media platforms like twitter that help push interactions. Chris Messina suggested that people use the # symbol to organise groups. Since then, hashtags have gained popularity on platforms like Twitter and Instagram.

On Twitter, there is a dedicated space where people can see what hashtag is trending. They can also be used to check how many tweets have been posted using a particular hashtag that essentially tells us what is the topic of discussion on the social media platform.

Furthermore, hashtags can be used to find top tweets, latest tweets, photos, and videos regarding a particular hashtag. However, despite their usefulness, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has stated in clear terms that he hates hashtags. While replying to an image that had a tweet created by ChatGPT on SpaceX, the tweet had hashtags and Musk replied with a tweet suggesting he doesn’t use hashtags.
