Who is Guddu Muslim?: A day after the triple murder of Umesh Pal and his gunmen, the UP Police named 10 suspects in the FIR. So far, six of them, including dreaded gangsters Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf, have been killed. The first encounter took place on February 27th, when Arbaz was killed in Prayagraj. He was the driver of the SUV that the murderer used to kill Umesh Pal.

Later, on the 6th of March, Usman too was encountered in Prayagraj. On April 13, Atiq’s son Asad and his aid Ghulam were gunned down by the police in Jhansi. Additionally, UP Police has announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for giving information about Atiq’s wife, Shaista Parveen. The other three accused named in the FIR are Guddu Muslim, Armaan, and Sabir. All of them are absconding, and the UP Police has announced Rs 5 lakh rewards for giving information about their whereabouts.

In this context, it becomes important to understand who the linchpin Guddu Muslim is and what are his dreaded acts that became the reason for his notoriety.

UP Police launch an operation to nab Guddu Muslim and Shaista Parveen

UP STF DIG Anant Dev Tiwari has admitted that the state police force has not been able to nab ‘Guddu Muslim’, Shaista Parveen, and other culprits in the Umesh Pal murder case. However, he has assured that they will soon arrest them.

Some reports claim that both Shaista Parveen and Guddu Muslim are acting in coordination and were the ones who gave crucial intel on other members of the Atiq Ahmed gang. Reports further add that both Guddu Muslim and Shaista Parveen are together and are planning to flee to Nepal via the Bihar border.

So, why this intense focus on Guddu Muslim, and why the great fuss about him? In fact, the last words of Ashraf, “Main bat ye hai ki Guddu Muslim..” have surpassed the hyped mystery of “Why Kattappa killed Bahubhali?” Was Ashraf about to spill the beans on Guddu Muslim or his alleged betrayal when he was gunned down? So, here is the notorious track record of Guddu Muslim aka Guddu Bambaaz.

Guddu Bambaaz: Bomb factory on the move

UP-East and Bihar have no dearth of notorious gangsters and a plethora of stories of their heinous crimes. But the uncanny story of Guddu Muslim is a totally different case altogether. Instead of using guns or knives to instill terror in the common public, Guddu Muslim seems to have idolised Sardar Khan of the Gangs of Wasseypur. In the movie,

‘Hazrat hazrat hazrat, Sardar Khan threatens his rival with bombing the streets so much so that the entire area would be full of sulphur smoke.’

In real life, Guddu Muslim has literally “bombed” his way to the top of the most notorious gang. He has made hurling bombs his favourite pastime. He seems to be doing it with absolute ease, but of course that is a sadistic pleasure.

As per reports, a bomb-making expert in Nepal’s underworld taught him how to make crude bombs. It is said that Guddu Muslim has sharpened his bomb-making skills so much that he carry all the raw materials with him and assemble the bomb within a minute or two.

Even after getting pin-point accurate intel on him, police officials have many times failed to catch him, but once in Varanasi and once in Meerut are the two prominent escapes. He has slipped from police personnel even after coming within metres of the police forces solely by hurling bombs at the police personnel within a blink of an eye.

As per the police, Guddu Muslim learned to make crude bombs in school and perfected his criminal skills as early as the 1990s. Police officials further add that Guddu Muslim carry the raw materials — nails, shards, gunpowder, sutli, a thread etc. — in separate packets. He has been doing this for decades to avoid getting caught and assemble the bomb even while being on the move.

To understand the gravity of this danger and the quick assembly of a bomb, a clip from the Hasil movie serves as a good example. In it’s opening scene, Irfan Khan gathers the raw material for the crude bomb while being on the run and assembles it while still being on the move.

Coming back to reality, Guddu Muslim is a threat on a grander scale. He is notorious for his expertise in making and throwing hand grenades, even while riding pillion on a bike.

A crucial link to end organised crime in UP and Bihar

Guddu Muslim is far more dangerous than just any other henchman of these mafia gangs. Other than assembling bombs, Guddu Muslim is claimed to be working as a freelance bomb manufacturer for several mafia gangs active in UP and Bihar. He has said to carry out killing and terror acts with the top names of the underworld. He has worked for several dons, including Dhananjay Singh, Abhay Singh, Sri Paraksh Shukla, and Mukhtar Ansari. He has been working for Atiq Ahmed for the last 10 years.

A brief history

Born in Allahabad, Guddu Muslim started committing crimes like robbery and extortion at the young age of 15. Guddu mastered bomb-making skills while still in school. Additionally, he received bomb-making instruction in Bengal, where it is akin to a “cottage industry.” He developed his abilities, earning the moniker of “Guddu Bambaaz” and “Guddu Muslim.

A police official revealed that Frederick Gomes, a physical education lecturer at La Martiniere College in Lucknow, was killed in March 1997, and Guddu’s name was the first to be connected to the crime.

The tender business pushed him closer to Shri Prakash Shukla, one of the most feared mafia leaders. Later, Shukla provided new opportunities for him and connected Guddu with Bihar mafia figures Parvez Tada and Suraj Bhan. Tada operated a complex network. He provided semi-automatic guns and AK series rifles to criminals in addition to ammo. Along with Omar Khayyam, Guddu used to sneak pistols made in China into the country from Pakistan.

After the 1998 shooting of Shriprakash Shukla, Guddu Muslim teamed up with Bihar don Udaybhan and frequently travelled to UP to carry out crimes. He was detained by the UP Police in Patna in 2001, but he was able to secure bail.

Guddu temporarily moved to Bihar as the U.P. STF was after him. He worked for both Suraj and Uday Bhan. According to an officer, the Gorakhpur police unit detained him outside Patna’s Beur jail in 2001. “However, Atiq Ahmed saved him and extricated him. Guddu then started working for Atiq and, over time, developed a close relationship with him.

Later, in 2019, he was charged by the CBI with the murder of Raju Pal. Now, the missing link in the case will be known after his arrest. Only then will we be able to know what Ashraf wanted to convey about Guddu Muslim before he was shot to death.
