Baijnath Temple Himachal Pradesh – Guide

Baijnath Temple is one of the most popular temples in Himachal Pradesh, where Lord Shiva is worshiped as the ‘God of Healing’. Baijnath or Vaidyanath is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Medicinal properties are found in the water of this temple, which cures many diseases. This temple attracts lakhs of tourists every year.

Baijnath Temple was built in 1204 AD by two native merchants Ahuka and Manuka, who were devotees of Lord Shiva. Baijnath Temple, located just 16 kms from Palampur, is one such temple where one gets immense peace of mind by worshiping Lord Shiva. This is one of the few temples in the country where both Lord Shiva and King Ravana are worshipped.

History of this Temple

Talking about the legend of Baijnath temple, the demon king Ravana was a devotee of Lord Shiva. He always wanted to become the king of Lanka and for this he decided to do penance in the name of Lord Shiva. He cut off his ten heads and offered them to Lord Shiva as his prayer. Lord Shiva pleased with him not only gave him unique power to rule the land of Lanka but also gave him the boon of knowledge and restored all his heads as before.

After this Ravana requested Lord Shiva to go to Lanka. Lord Shiva transformed himself into a Shivling and told him to install this Shivalinga by keeping it down only after reaching Lanka. When Ravana was going to Lanka with the Shiva Linga, strong winds started blowing and unbearable cold disturbed Ravana, while Ravana saw a beggar sitting on a street corner and he asked that beggar to hold the Shivalinga. That beggar was Lord Vishnu, who had changed his disguise. As soon as Ravana gave the Shivling to Vishnu, he immediately put it down and the Shivling got established there and became immovable. Where that Shivling was kept, today there is Baijnath temple at the same place.

Baijnath Temple Timings

Baijnath Temple opens at 6:00 AM in the morning and close at 9:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 7:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 8:00 PM in the evening.

Kareri Lake is a shallow and fresh water lake located in the Dhauladhar range about 9 km northwest of Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

Vajreshwari Devi Temple

This is the famous temple of kangra. This Devi Temple is few kms away from Baijnath Temple. This temple is dedicated to Devi sati.

This Devi Temple is built by King Ummed Singh in the year 1762. This temple is few kms away from Baijnath Temple.
