According to a recent research conducted by the United States-based organisation, reusable water bottles can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria. Researchers discovered two kinds of bacteria when they swabbed various parts of different water bottles, including the spout lid, straw lid, and squeeze-top lid: Gram-negative rods and bacillus. According to the research, water bottles can contain up to 40,000 times more bacteria than a typical toilet seat, making them a “portable Petri dish.”
The Report
It is suggested that the water bottles be washed with hot soapy water at least once a day and sanitised at least once a week. Water bottles contain twice as many germs as the kitchen sink, four times the amount found on a computer mouse, and 14 times the amount found in a pet’s drinking dish.

While bacteria on water bottles are not always dangerous, they can be identical to those found in the human mouth. According to Dr. Andrew Edwards of Imperial College London, drinking vessels are expected to have some degree of microbial presence due to the diversity of bacteria found in the human mouth.
