Mughals and Madrasas: Himanta hits fresh on Congress

Wearing a saffron safa on his head, Himanta made his intentions clear of shutting down all madrasas, or if not all, at least bringing down the number.

The relationship between Assam’s CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and his earlier ally is far more complicated than we think. After being associated with the Congress party for 15 long years, he is now busy reducing Congress to rubble in the North East, once an impregnable fortress for the grand old party.

It doesn’t end here. Himanta has mounted a fresh attack on the Congress party, calling it the ‘New Mughals’. Sarma is currently in Karnataka. Addressing an event on Thursday night, he went on a tirade against opposition parties. He accused the Congress as well as the Communists of distorting history and misrepresenting facts, labeling the Congress party as new Mughals. He was there to inaugurate a light and sound show on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

He said, “With this light and sound show, he (MLA) has ensured that the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be followed in this country, and that in the future too Sanatana (dharma) will be followed, and that Sanatana ideals will become stronger in this country.”

Noting that Abhay Patil, a local BJP MLA, had planned the light and sound show six years ago, Sarma again made accusations against the Congress. “The Congress government then did not extend any help. Why will Congress help?” he asked, adding, “Congress will never help. Congress will think about Babar but not Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”

Himanta brings Aurangzeb and requests that history be rewritten

Saying that the 17th-century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had tried to destroy Hinduism, he said that Shivaji worked to protect Sanatan Dharma and its traditions. He also said that Sanatan sanskriti won’t decimate, saying, “Till today, India is Sanatani and Hindu, and until the sun and moon exist, India will go forward on the basis of its traditions.”

Mounting an attack on communist historians, saying that they tried to make it appear that Aurangzeb ruled with “complete” India under his control while all of south India and the region from Assam to the North-East were never a part of his empire. He said, “We will have to rewrite that history in a new way. We will have to say that Shivaji Maharaj was stronger than Aurangazeb. Such history has to be written by Indians.”

Sarma insisted that India’s history is only that of Shivaji, Durgadas Rathore and Guru Gobind Singh and claimed that “Congress and Communists have made the history of Babar, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb as India’s history.”

He also spoke about the construction of mandirs, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the same. Comparing Mughal rulers with the Congress party, he said, “Earlier Mughals tried to weaken India, and now the Congress is doing it,” citing the Congress’s objection to Ram Mandir construction. He asked, “Are you (the Congressmen) children of Mughals? Why do you speak in favor of the Babri Masjid and not the Ram Mandir? They represent new Mughals.”

Himanta cracks down on madrasas

Wearing a saffron safa on his head, Himanta made his intentions clear of shutting down all madrasas, or if not all, at least bringing down the number. Sarma stated that people from Bangladesh arrive in Assam on a daily basis, implying that Assamese culture and traditions are under threat.

He then said, “I have shut down 600 madrasas, but my intention is to shut all madrasas. It was said, “How can you say such a thing? I replied that I could say such a thing because we don’t need madrasas; we need doctors and engineers. Schools, colleges, and universities are our needs.”

“There is no need for madrasas in this ‘New India’,” said the Assam CM, adding, “We have to move forward in this direction; we have to transform our education system; the time has come to rewrite our history in a new way, as it was distorted earlier.” Himanta Biswa Sarma has been rock solid in taking Hindutva forward in the North-East, a pillar for the BJP, and his fresh attack on Congress and the Communists stands in deposition for the same.
