Haridwar Chandi Mata Temple – Guide

Mata Chandi Devi Temple is situated in Haridwar which is called the holy city of Uttarakhand. This temple is about 1200 years old, which has become a major pilgrimage site of Haridwar at present. Due to the temple of Maa Chandi Devi being situated on Neel Shikhar, this yatra is also known as Neel Parvat Tirth. This temple is one of the Panchatirth located in Haridwar, which has great importance in Sanatan Dharma.

History of this Temple

The main idol installed in the Haridwar Chandi Mata Temple was installed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. At present, the temple of Mata Chandi Devi, which is seen here, was built in 1929 AD by King Suchet Singh of Kashmir. According to religious beliefs, once upon a time the demon king Shumbha and Nishumbha had captured the kingdom of Indra, the king of the deities.

After intense prayers of all the gods to kill both the demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha, a goddess emerged from Mother Parvati, whose name was Ma Chandika. Mother Chandika killed both the demons here and rested for some time on this hill. At present, the name of the peak on which the temple of Maa Chandi Devi is situated is Neel Shikhar.
