Northeast Exit Polls 2023: The dialogues from the Bollywood film Anek highlights how the North-Eastern region has received stepmotherly treatment from mainland India and its government for many years. It seemed that the integration papers had been signed but that the union governments forgot to continue the process of integration.
Or probably the region was deliberately left over by the Congress party, which ruled for almost 7 decades, contributing to its current situation with no infrastructure, connectivity, or development. The same cannot be said after the 2014 Modi era and Northeast Exit Polls 2023 favouring the BJP-led NDA in deposition for the same.
There have been two untouchables in the history of modern India: first, the Bhartiya Janata Party, often dismissed as the cow-belt party of the Hindu-Hindi party, and second, the North-East region of India. However, the recent Northeast Exit Polls 2023 giving the edge to the BJP-led alliance NDA suggest that the BJP has successfully shed that image, and it seems that the integration of the North-Eastern region with mainstream India is almost complete.
Northeast Exit Polls 2023 give an edge to the BJP-led NDA
In the run-up to the general elections in 2024, the assembly elections in three north-eastern states, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, seem to act as semi-finals, setting the tone for the bigger game. And in the majority of them, the saffron party seems to be returning, as per Northeast Exit Polls 2023.
As per the India Today-Axis My India Northeast Exit Polls 2023, the BJP is all set to win around 40 seats in the Tripura assembly elections out of a total of 60. Tripura was a crucial state for the BJP, as in 2018 the state had seen a major shift in its political structure as the BJP besieged the leftist bastion by grabbing 44 out of 60 seats.
The Congress is being seen as decimated this time. In Nagaland, the BJP is set to return along with its coalition partner, the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). In Meghalaya too, the saffron party is expected to improve its tally remarkably while the chair remains with the NPP. The grand old
The Congress party, which earlier used to be a dominant party in the Northeast, is likely to be wiped out in these three states, according to the exit polls.

Northeast Exit Polls 2023: Factors leading to the BJP’s win in the state
The assembly elections can be seen as the BJP’s efforts to consolidate votes in the North-East, and the party appears to be doing well. However, the North East was an uphill battle for the saffron party as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The strategically crucial north-eastern region of India was ignored for most of India’s existence. The region was marred by insurgency, and the people were left to fight on their own. North-East India, or the seven states, was never included in the development agenda, and many areas remained isolated from the rest of India, with no railway or road connections.
The Modi government, since its inception, has laid special focus on the region, with a spree of infrastructural projects. A focused approach has been adopted for resolving the insurgency issue and border disputes between the states, thus saving innumerable lives.
Talking in numbers, the Modi government has spent a massive Rs 3.45 lakh crore for the North East region in the last eight years, which equals the cumulative spending in the 25 years prior to that. In comparison to the 13th Finance Commission, the 14th Finance Commission has given 183 percent more funds to the North East.

BJP’s winning card: Development
Most Indians did not consider the Northeast region of our country to be part of ‘Mainstream India’ for the majority of our country’s existence as an independent nation. Perennial insurgency, a poor transport network, and Congress’ apathy towards it were the main reasons behind it. However, the Modi government has changed the dynamics, and this can be attributed to the BJP’s rise to prominence in the region.
To add to this, the Modi factor has also benefited the saffron party. The welfare schemes and development projects, combined with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personality cult and efforts to connect with the masses, have undoubtedly boosted the saffron party’s image in the region.
Whether it’s going to the most remote villages to listen to people’s pain and problems, or dressing up in traditional attire, the Prime Minister has made a concerted effort to demonstrate that the North-East is not only an integral but also an important part of the country.
The prime minister donning the traditional tribal attire and being broadcasted live on national television has definitely set in as a proud moment for the people of the region. And once you connect with the culture, be it development or politics, everything is set to follow. The same is happening to the BJP.
