In days of yore, Mahabharat was a staple of households everywhere. Yet, no one can tell precisely how or when the notion that it should not be kept inside the home began to gain traction. Some say it is not advisable to recite any form of Mahabharat at home, as this can lead to disagreements and arguments between family members.
This rumour has been proven to be false. The truth is that Mahabharat is a profound and influential work of ancient Indian culture and literature, and should be kept and studied in homes. It has been an integral part of Indian culture and tradition for centuries. It contains invaluable lessons that can be learned and applied in our lives.
Mahabharat is not just about war
Dr Jaishankar pointed out that the stories of Bhagwan Krishna and Bhagwan Hanuman from Mahabharat and the Ramayan, respectively, demonstrate the power of diplomacy and how it can be used to resolve difficult situations. He highlighted how, through the use of negotiation and compromise, these two characters were able to achieve peace and harmony in their respective time.
The minister also stressed over how these stories can serve as an example for modern-day diplomats. He noted that by following the same principles of negotiation, compromise and understanding, present-day statesmen can come to agreements that benefit both parties.

The Mahabharat encompasses a wealth of knowledge beyond the Bhagavad Gita, including the Parashar Gita, conversations between Dhritarashtra and Sanjay, Vidur’s advice, Bhishma’s wisdom, Yaksha’s questions and more.
Many households have texts such as Durga Saptashati, Ramayana, Purans and others, all of which include accounts of wars. Thus, it is incorrect to avoid keeping them at home solely because of war descriptions. No Hindu scripture prohibits keeping the Mahabharat in homes. If it were, author Ved Vyas would have stated so. There is no record of any ill-effects arising from keeping this book in the home.
It is highly blasphemous for any heretic to suggest that Hindus should not read or own this book. Mahabharat is the only text that provides a comprehensive overview of the Hindu religion and its history, as well as covering topics such as religion, policy, knowledge, logic, politics, salvation, education and all the arts.
Mahabharat is an ancient Sanskrit epic poem that is widely considered to be one of the greatest works of literature in the world. It is an important source of ancient Hindu texts, teachings, and culture, and contains stories and lessons that are still relevant today.
Mahabharat is full of wisdom and is said to contain the essence of all the Veds, Purans and Upanishads. By reading and understanding Mahabharat, one can gain a better understanding of Indian history and scriptures and knowledge. Therefore, it is highly recommended that every Sanatani Hindu’s home should have a copy of Mahabharat.
