US bipartisan resolution: After the balloon drama, the USA has gone all guns blazing against China. There is now a bipartisan resolution consensus building up for recognition of India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh.
Bipartisan resolution for Arunachal Pradesh
A bipartisan resolution has been introduced in the US Senate to write into the law about American recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as an Indian state. Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat and Bill Hagerty, a Republican introduced it and Senator John Cornyn, Co-Chair of the India Caucus sponsored it. The resolution says, “The United States recognises the state of Arunachal Pradesh not as a disputed territory but as an integral part of the Republic of India, and this recognition is not qualified in any way.”
It condemned China for its unilateral aggression on the LAC with India. It also commended India for taking initiatives such as safeguarding its telecom infrastructure, investigating supply chains and procurement procedures, implementing investment screening requirements, and increasing collaboration with Taiwan in public health and other sectors.

Anti-China rather than pro-India
The mention of Taiwan in the bipartisan resolution is an indicator of US’ strategy behind codifying its alleged 6-decades old policy into the law. The bipartisan resolution caters to anti-China sentiments rather than being pro-India. To check China’s dictatorial rise, the US needs to team up with other countries hurt by China’s actions.
China is the reason why it is part of groups like QUAD and IPEF. The urgency has been exacerbated by the Ukraine-Russia crisis. The US fears that If Ukraine loses, it could strengthen a Russia-China alliance, and if Russia loses, it may become a junior partner to China. The US wants to weaken the support of both countries in international forums and sees India as key as it is already not fond of China. But the problem is with taking India away from Russia.
Wooing away Russia?
That gives another dimension to this resolution. The bipartisan resolution is also a step in the direction of putting a crack in India-Russia friendship. That is because, despite Russia being an all-weather friend for India, it can’t take an anti-China gesture. The USA is trying to fill the gap. Side-by-side, it has also ramped up its efforts to reduce India’s military cooperation between India and Russia.
To be blunt, the Arunachal issue holds strategic significance for the USA, while for India, it doesn’t hold that much. Simply because, elections after elections, the people of Arunachal have shown their extensive support to Indian democracy. Surely, some foreign investors may start looking towards the region, but money is already raining in the state.
