Saurabh Shukla was born into a family of artists in Gorakhpur in 1963. Both of his parents were classical musicians. Evidently, his mother Jogmaya Shukla is considered to be the first female tabla player in the category of Indian music.
When he was two years old, his family moved to Delhi where he completed his education and eventually turned to theatre in 1984. He joined the National School of Drama’s theatre company. There his acting performance caught the attention of filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, giving him his debut role in the film “Bandit Queen”.
Despite initial setbacks, 1998 proved to be a breakthrough year for him. His role in the critically and commercially successful film “Satya” established him as a notable actor in the industry. He impressed people in the role of Kallu Mama so much that the film even had a special song dedicated to his character, “Goli Maar Bheje Mein!”
Once in an interview, he talked about why he loves making such films. He said, “Because I love such movies. Depicting reality is both interesting as well as challenging.”
Over the years, Saurabh Shukla has acted in a variety of genres, including multilingual films and courtroom dramas.

He played a small but important role in Kamal Haasan’s “Hey Ram” in 2000 and showed his talent in films like “Balu ABCDEFG”, “Aparichit” and “Mumbai Express”.
In 2012, Shukla impressed audiences with his role as a policeman in Anurag Basu’s “Barfi”. Later, his performance as Justice Sunderlal Tripathi in “Jolly LLB” made him a national sensation. He received the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.
Shukla also played impactful roles in films like “Raid” and “Bala”. In several of his films, he gave stiff competition to the lead actors with his exceptional acting skills.
