During the Covid-19 pandemic, India not only conducted the biggest vaccination drive but also conducted a ‘Vaccine Maitri’ mission. Under Vaccine Maitri, India exported millions of vaccines to countries around the world. Most of them belong to Latin America, Africa and Asia. 37% of those vaccines were exported as a gift. The hopelessness felt by the poor and small countries was addressed by India. As a result, India is now the de-facto leader of the Global South. But since then, India is continuously facing an assault on its pharmaceutical sector.
US warns against Indian eye drop
According to reports, the US Food and Drug administration has warned against using Indian eye drop which led to drug resistant bacterial infection in 55 patients. The health protection agency of US, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is testing unopened drops of Chennai based company. Meanwhile the company has suspended the production of the eye drops.
After the vaccine diplomacy, India got favour from around the world. India’s diplomatic success was supplemented by its pharmaceutical sector. Reportedly, India’s pharma sector is expected to have a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12%. With that growth, the sector will reach $130 billion till 2030.
This development progress of India cautioned some anti-India cabal around the world. As a result, consecutive events have unfolded since then. In October 2022, it was reported that 66 children died in Gambia after consuming Indian made cough syrup from Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Sonipat. Later in December, the same case was reported from Uzbekistan where 18 children died after consuming Noida based Marian Biotech’s ‘Doc-1 MAX’ syrup.
Unfolding conspiracy
The death of children can’t be justified and the culprit should be dealt with according to the law. But, now the credibility of such allegations is under question. As of December 2022, the National Drug Controller found the cough syrups related to Gambia to be in compliance with the norms. India wrote a letter to WHO regarding it and asked for data to determine the cause of death.
And now, all of a sudden, eye drops issue has taken over the news. There is a certainty of conspiracy in the incidents and their chronological inception. This is being done solely to defame the Indian Pharmaceutical sector and if it is left unaddressed, this will definitely harm the growth of the sector. In order to maintain the growth and also the credibility of Indian medicines it becomes crucial for the government of India to deal with the issue as soon as possible.
