Krishna Janmasthan Mandir Mathura – Guide

Shri Krishna Janmasthan Mandir is located in the holy city of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Krishna Janmasthan Mandir Mathura is of great importance to the Hindus as it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Upon entering the temple, the divine atmosphere and its sacredness fills the heart with the belief that this is indeed the place where Lord Krishna took birth. Apart from the prison cell, there are other temples located within the Krishna Janmasthan temple complex dedicated to other gods and goddesses.

History of this Temple

Shri Krishna Janmasthan Mandir Mathura is built around the prison in which Lord Krishna was born. It is believed to have been built 5000 years ago by the great grandson of Krishna Vajranabh. Then, it was rebuilt in 400 AD during the reign of Chandragupta Vikramaditya. However it was destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1017 AD.

In 1150 AD, the temple was constructed for the third time during the reign of King Dhrupad Dev Janjua, the emperor of 16^th century Mathura. 125 years later during the reign of Jahangir, Raja Vir Singh Bundela rebuilt it with Rs 3.3 million. But Aurangzeb destroyed it in 1669 AD and built a mosque in its place. When the city of Mathura came under the British, the temple area was auctioned in 1815. Late Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya undertook the reconstruction of the temple by establishing ‘Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust’ on February 21, 1911, which was completed in February 1982.

Krishna Janmasthan Mandir Mathura opens at 5:00 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM in the evening. Garbh Griha Darshan of this Temple is 5.00 am to 9.30 am.

Located to the south of the Shahi Idgah, this temple was built by Ramakrishna Dalmiya in the memory of his mother Jadadevi Dalmiya. The construction started on 29 June 1957 and it was inaugurated on 6 September 1958 by Hanuman Prasad Poddar.

Potra Kund

It is a large water tank which is believed to be the first bathing place of Lord Krishna.
