The chronicles of IS Johar
IS Johar was born on 16th February, 1920 in undivided India. His family was in India to attend a wedding in Jalandhar when the ghost of partition was lurking over the undivided India. On account of the ghastly partition, his family could not return to Lahore. During this stay, he started to work in Jalandhar itself. In connection with work, he used to travel to Indian cities Delhi and Mumbai. Meanwhile he felt fascinated towards the entertainment world.
He began his cinematic career as a writer. Director Roop Shorey gave him a chance to write a script for the film, ‘Ek Thi Ladki.’ IS Johar was a narcissist of the highest order as in his satirical films he left nothing for others. Right from production, direction and even at times, he played the lead roles in his own films. Additionally, he was fond of his own name which reflected in his movies’ titles. For example – ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa,’ ‘Johar in Kashmir,’ and ‘Mera Naam Johar’ are few of his prominent films.
He was also influential in Hollywood and acted in several films, including the Oscar-winning ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ He was courageous and was not immune to controversies. However, unlike his nephew, Karan Johar, IS Johar regularly raised his voice against anti-India elements.
He made satirical films on serious and social issues like the horrific partition of India, Emergency and Vasectomy. His undeterred and unapologetic attitude rattled many including Former PM Indira Gandhi. He made a film about the Emergency and the Nasbandi program during that time. Apart from this, his song “Kashmir Hai Bharat Ka, Kashmir Na Denge” was censored by the Indira Gandhi government.
However, he remained undeterred with such controversies and continued to work in his field contributing to the world of cinema in general and Hindi cinema in specific until his death in year 1984.
