Pillayarpatti Temple, Tamil Nadu – Overview
Sri Karpaga Vinayagar Temple (Pillayarpatti Temple) is in the Sivagangai region of Tamil Nadu. It runs from nearby Karaikudi to Tirupati Kunrakkudi. The main deity is Pillaiyar or Ganesha. Pillaiyarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar. The word Vinayaka means “the unique leader.”
It is the symbol of the Valampuri structure with its trunk turned to the right. Vinayagar is known as “Karapaga Vinayagar” because it fulfills the wishes of its aspirants like the Karpagam tree. It was accepted that a follower who worshiped the Vallamburi Vinayagar facing north would be rewarded with wealth.

History of this Temple
Pillayarpatti Temple is an ancient stone temple. Scholars say that Ganesha is the presiding deity of wisdom, and is also known as “Karapaga Vinayagar” because he fulfills the wishes of devotees like the Vinayagar Karpagam tree. Ganesha is seen with two hands, unlike elsewhere with four hands. In addition, he appears in an “artha padma” posture, with his legs folded without touching the posture and sitting without blinking his stomach.
Pillayarpatti Temple was built during the reign of the Pandya kings in the 5th century AD and is situated in a cave. The temple has two temple towers and grand Vimana. Inscriptions indicate that Vikrama Pandya Thevar, Kuluthunga Chola III, Sundara Pandya Thevar and Kulasekhara Thevar made huge contributions to the temple. In the 13th century AD the Nattukottai Chettiars endowed the temple with land and gems and made several structural additions.

Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary
Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is situated between Tirupattur and Madurai. The Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is located 51 km from Madurai near Savaganga on the Madurai-Melur-Tiruppathur road. It is located in the villages of Vettangudipatti and Periya Kollukudipatti in Tiruppathur taluk of Sivagangai district.
The sanctuary is spread over 40 hectares and includes the tanks of the villages of Vettangudi, Periyakollukudi and Chinna Kollukkudi. The Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary provides a natural shelter for migratory birds throughout the winter. Gray herons, darters, spoonbills, white ibis, Asian open bill storks and night herons breed here.
Chettinadu Palace
The Chettinadu houses at Karaikudi, Pallathur, Athangudi, and Kothamangalam are the grandest and most extravagant examples of architectural splendour. Chettinad Place is a beautiful building located in the Chettinad area of Sivagangai district, 10 km from Karaikudi.
Dr Annamalai Chettiar, the founder of Indian Bank and Annamalai University in Chidambaram, planned and built the Chettinad Palace. The Chettinad Palace of Sivagangai, an exceptional example of Chettinad architecture, was built in 1912.
Aayiram Jannal Veedu
Aayiram Jannal Veedu is a famous place in Karaikudi. The direct translation of the place’s name is “the house of a thousand windows,” a fitting name for a house with a thousand windows! The haveli is well known among visitors, who make it a point to visit it whenever they are in Karaikudi.
The mansion was built in 1941 on 20,000 square feet of land and at that time Rs 1 lakh 25 thousand was spent, which is very less now. The house has 25 large rooms and five large hallways. There are about 20 doors and 1000 windows in the house.

By Train- The nearest railway station from this temple is at Karaikudi, which is at the distance of about 8 km from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.
By Road- From Tiruchirappalli, the temple is 100 km away. Karaikudi is well connected to all parts of Tamil Nadu so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle.
