History of this place
The Oxford of South India has a rich history ruled by the Cholas, Pandyas, Kallabrahs, Pallavas and Veerapandiya Kattabomman. After all these kings Palayamkottai was ruled by the British. The British rule is considered the golden age of Palayamkottai. It was only after his arrival that Palayamkottai started excelling in the fields of education and transport.
Palayamkottai was earlier known as Sri Vallavan Mangalam. Mangalam means a place given free of cost to Brahmins. From this we can know that at that time places in Palayamkottai were given free of cost to Brahmins. Also known as the twin cities. This is because this city is a part of Tirunelveli.
The reason for naming the town as Palayamkottai is that the Palayans also known as Kennedys built a big fort and lived here. The present market, Palayamkottai museum, Veerapandiya Kattabomman idol and Prasanna Ganesh temple are on the northern, western, eastern and southern boundaries of the fort. It is also said that the fort was divided into two forts, one inside and one outside. But currently there is no any trace of the existence of this fort earlier.
There are many temples, mosques and churches in the city. Notably, it has Shiva Temple, Perumal Temple and Jamia Masjid, which are hundreds of years old. And now a huge church is being built. Apart from these temples, there are also many other temples which is dedicated to Goddess Amman. This festival is celebrated every year for 10 days in these temples. This festival is one of the most famous festivals of India.

Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary
Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous places to visit in Tirunelveli as it is one of the tiger sheltering national parks in the whole of South India. You will also find many animals like lion tailed macaque, bonnet macaque, nilgiri langur, sambar, nilgiri tahr, sloth bear, gaur, elephant, panther, flying squirrel, wild dog and pangolin. You can also go for activities like trekking and safari ride.
Agasthiyar Falls
Agasthiyar Falls is a spectacular waterfall with a religious belief that if a person takes a dip in the water, he will be absolved of his sins. Agasthiyar Falls is located on the Tamiraparni River at a distance of 42 km from Tirunelveli. The Agasthiyar Falls is also known as the Papanasam Falls where you might even get a chance to spot a tiger or a cheetah in the wild. Breathe in the fresh air and this place is worth visiting, it is one of the best tourist places in Tamil Nadu.
