History of this Temple

The origin of Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is believed to date back to the Somavanshi period and most historians believe that it was probably built sometime after the Parasurameshwara temple, but before the Brahmeswara temple, which was built in 1060 AD, the exact date of construction is not known.

It is difficult to estimate the year, but it is believed to have been around 950 AD. It is also strongly believed that the structure gave rise to a new culture in building style, which influenced many temples built during that era.

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is an architectural masterpiece and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Odisha architecture. The west-facing shrine is in the lower basement and is accompanied by several other shrines. The wall of the octagonal compound surrounding the temple is covered with elaborate carvings.

The complex has a torana, vimana, Jaganmohan and a sanctum sanctorum, which are considered distinctive features. This spectacular technique of construction was replicated by many other temples which adopted the same unique Peethadeula style.
