Every life and its experiences are a story in itself. Those who perceive a story in every development in their surrounding become the best story tellers. And as the stories are cherished by the people of different age groups it become the reason for cinema’s success in binding the masses. Ultimately, movies become the reflection of society. If any movie fails to connect with the people, it becomes a flop show.
But in current scenario, the opinion of the people is manipulated by several means. Sometimes, the best story line gets almost no appreciation and the worst movie gets a lot of appraisals.
Storyline
Masaan is a 2015 drama movie. The movie depicts 2 stories that are knitted together and are running simultaneously. Masaan revolves around the story of Devi (Richa Chaddha) and Deepak (Vickey Kaushal) showcasing their pain and a desperation for salvation. The movie also has some versatile actors like Sanjay Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi and Shweta Tripathi.
Devi is a computer trainer who is caught in a hotel room with her student by the police. The student commits suicide and to get Devi free from the abatement charges, her father agrees to pay the bribe. On the other hand, Deepak comes from a lower caste family which works at cremation site in Varanasi. He falls in love with a girl named Shaalu while preparing for railway job. Devi fights the odds of society and Deepak’s story takes a twist which leads him to pain.
Analysis of the movie
The movie was projected as one of the best movies and it got a lot of praise. But analytically, the movie fails to hook the audience. The storyline of both the characters is very ordinary and has nothing special to applaud. Undoubtedly, the star cast of the movie is versatile and has almost succeeded in binding the audience with their acting skills. But on the part of storyline, with every scene it feels like the story will evolve into something interesting but ultimately fails in doing so.
The only thing that connects the story of Devi and Deepak is the ring. Devi’s father gets the ring that belongs to Deepak’s girlfriend Shaalu Gupta and sells it to pay the bribe to get Devi acquitted of abatement charges.
The movie released on the silver screen during the time when the Bollywood movies were attracting audience with action and fast pace storyline and VFX. People found it to be of a different league. Their earlier experience with the movies like Paan Singh Tomar and Kahani among others was also good. As people had a consensus on conventional cinema which is based primarily on storyline, the movie was welcomed by the audience. The movie was projected as a slow and dark movie which resembles the society. But, unlike many movies of that league, Masaan stands nowhere.
There are only 2 thing that makes the movie worth watching. First is the song “Tu kisi rail si guzarti hai” written by Dushyant Kumar. The song was also awarded at the Con Film Festival. Second is “Ye dukh kahe nahi khatam hota be” dialogue of Vickey Kaushal.
What went unnoticed
These types of movies are known to create interest in people with every scene. Indeed, that is the purpose of the movie. But, Masaan does not get successful in doing that. After a few scenes it starts to bore the viewers and creates resentment regarding lack of a binding story.
There is a trend in the society that the movies that are a little confusing and hard to analyse critically are tagged as the best movies. This narrative is sometimes used by average films to dodge the critics.
Masaan is the example of such type of movies. The movie is good and satisfying but the appraisal it received was overhyped. The viewers should only focus on the movie and make an opinion according to their experience rather than falling for the marketing tactic of producers.
