Gauri Shankar Mandir Delhi – Guide
The 800-year-old Gauri Shankar Mandir is a Hindu temple and is located on the main old Delhi Road at Chandni Chowk near Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. Gauri Shankar Temple is completely dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most important temples of Lord Shiva.
The temple houses an 800-year-old brown coloured Shiva Linga surrounded by a representation of the female genitals made of marble. The Shiva Linga is surrounded by snakes made of silver and represents a cosmic pillar, the centre of the universe or life.
History of this Temple
According to history the temple was built by Lord Ganga Dhar, a Maratha soldier who was a devotee of Lord Shiva. He was once seriously wounded in a battle and his chances of survival were bleak. So, he prayed to Lord Shiva for his life and promised to build a beautiful temple if he survived. He removed all the obstacles and built the temple. His name is inscribed in Hindi in the lower part near the main entrance of the temple.
In 1959, Seth Jaipura renovated the temple and his name is inscribed on the windows of the temple. Inside the temple, idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati and their two sons, Ganesha and Kartika are enshrined. The ornaments of the idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati which are behind the Shiva Linga are made of real gold and those around the Lord Shiva Linga are made of silver. The Lingam also has a silver water vessel in which drops of water keep falling continuously.

Gauri Shankar Mandir Delhi Timings
Gauri Shankar Mandir Delhi opens from 5.00 AM to 10:00 AM in the morning and from 5.00 PM to 10.00 PM in the evening. Aarti done at 06:00 AM to 07:00 AM in the morning.
