Banke Bihari Temple Uttar Pradesh – Overview

Banke Bihari Temple Uttar Pradesh is one of the popular tourist attractions dedicated to Lord Krishna, in Vrindavan. Built in the year 1864, the temple is near the Shri Radha Vallabh Temple. It is counted among the most visited temples in Vrindavan. Named after Banke Bihari, the word Banke means ‘bowing at three angles and Bihari means ‘supreme enjoyer’.

The meaning refers to the image of Lord Krishna, where while playing the flute, his right knee is bent over the left knee and the right hand holds the flute. Banke Bihari Temple is one of those seven temples of Thakur ji in the city of Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. This famous holy site has an image of Lord Krishna in Tribhanga posture.

History of this Temple

The history of Banke Bihari Temple Uttar Pradesh goes back to Swami Haridas (Guru of Tansen) who established the temple. Once Swami Haridas sang a verse for his disciples at Nidhivan in Vrindavan. While he was singing, Lord Krishna appeared before him along with Radha.

It was then that Haridas asked the divine couple to merge. On his request, both Radha and Krishna merged and became the idol of Banke Bihari. It is believed that this is the idol in the Banke Bihari temple.

Swami Haridas himself had entrusted the responsibility of serving Bihari ji to Goswami Jagannath. And according to tradition till today the descendants of Goswami Jagannath ji serve Thakur ji. Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple was constructed in the year 1862. Initially the deity was worshiped in a temple at Nidhivan.

Later after the completion of the new complex, the idol of Shri Banke Bihari ji was shifted to the present temple. The architecture of the temple is influenced by the Rajasthani style with arches and pillars adding to its grandeur.

Prem Mandir

Prem Mandir was established in the year 2001 by the famous Jagadguru Shri Kripaluji Maharaj. Imbued with the eternal love of the deities, this temple is popularly known as the ‘Temple of God’s Love’. Imbued with loads of love, the famous Prem Mandir in Vrindavan is purely dedicated to Radha Krishna and Sita Ram.

Like most of the temples in Vrindavan, this one also embodies beautiful traditional architecture. The structure is adorned with beautiful carvings and white marble which further adds to the charm.

Radha Raman Temple

Radha Raman Temple is also one of the temple which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. One of the highly revered temples in Vrindavan, it depicts the intense love for Radha. Though dedicated to Radha, you will not find any idol of her in the temple. A magnificent crown is placed next to Lord Krishna which symbolizes his presence. Counted among the seven temples of Thakur, this is one of the most important temples of Vrindavan.

Shri Govind Dev ji Temple

Shri Govind Dev ji Temple is dedicated to the childhood of Lord Krishna. Adorned with red sandstone, this temple depicts the childhood home of Lord Krishna. It is known as one of the famous temples in Vrindavan. It is believed that the face of the idol resembles the face of the Lord at the time of his birth. Make sure to visit this holy place at least once in your lifetime.

By Train- The nearest railway station from banke bihari temple which is about 12 kms from Bihari Ji Mandir. Mathura Junction which is very well connected to major cities of the country. From here also you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services.
