Ramanujacharya Biography and Life story
Ramanuja sometimes pronounced as Ramanujan he is also known as Ramanujacharya. He was an Indian Hindu philosopher, guru and a social reformer. He was born in 1017 CE at Sriperumbudur, Chola Empire in present day it is Tamil Nadu, India and he died on 1137 CE.
He is known as one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism. For devotionalism his philosophical foundations were influential to the Bhakti movement.
Life story and works of Ramanuja
Ramanujacharya father name was Keseva Samayaji and his mother name was Kantimathi. Around 1033 CE Ramanuja married to a girl named Rahshambal. Within a few days of their wedding his father died. This made a bad impact on him and he goes in considerable grief.
After that Ramanuja gathered his young wife and his mother and left for Kanchipuram, where he settled. Govina Bhatta Ramanuja’s cousin and his closest friend and he is the only person with whom Ramanuja shared a mutual affection from early childhood soon joined him.
Ramanuja’s guru was Yadava Prakasa, who is a scholar and belonged to the Advaita Vedanta tradition. As the chief proponent of Vishishtadvaita subschool of Vedanta Ramanuja is famous and his disciples were authors of texts such as the Shatyayaniya Upanishad.
Under the Chola Empire Ramanujacharya was born into a Tamil Brahmin community, in a village called Sriperumbudur in present-day it is Tamil Nadu. He grew up in the Tamil culture, and in a stable society during the rule of the Chola dynasty.

This was the period which was one of pluralistic beliefs, where Vaishnava, Shaiva, Smarta traditions, Buddhism and Jainism were followed together. Before Ramanuja, the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya was already an established organization under Yamunacharya, and bhakti songs and devotional ideas are already a part of Tamil culture because of the twelve Alvars.
Ramanuja’s become popular because he was considered the first thinker in centuries that disputed Shankara’s theories, and who offered an alternative interpretation of Upanishadic scriptures.
Ramanujacharya is known as the most influential thinker of Hinduism devotional. He spread devotion thoughts and discipline in society through his nine works which is known as Navaratnas. He inlighten new insight into southern Indian Vaishnavism and became known as its first saint.
Ramanujacharya formed a Yoga that taught that the practising of bhakti is more important than mediation. For supreme attachment to one divine person Bhakti-Yoga is one of the most important forms.

How long did Ramanujacharya live?
Historians believe that Ramanujacharya lived the unusually long life of 120 years from 1017 to 1137 C.E., which is twice the average lifespan at the present time.

What happened to Ramanujacharya?
Ramanuja died with his head on the lap of Embar and his feet on the lap of Vaduga Nambi. He breathed his last breath in 1137 AD listening to the recitation of the Divya Prabhandam and looking at the Sri Padukas of Yamunacharya.
