Bengal brand ambassador: No one can name a single issue on the national stage about which West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has not spoken. She has an opinion on each and everything that is going on in the country. No matter if she is speaking against the national interest, she will speak taking up the line opposite to the central government or the central bodies. This is Mamata Banerjee.
All her political agenda has been to counter the Bhartiya Janata Party and malign the image of the Prime Minister. Oh, wait, she’s an expert at one more thing: hypocrisy; she shifts her positions on issues faster than a chameleon changes its color. The same has happened with the recent presidency of the BCCI.
Dada exits BCCI
Sourav Ganguly, the cricket icon of India’s exit as the BCCI President, has become a subject of political spat rather than a sports administration affair. Being one of the finest, Ganguly has served the BCCI as the board president for tenure of three years.
Binny Rogers, officially replaced Ganguly as the new president of the BCCI at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai. The two prominent parties in Ganguly’s home state West Bengal, namely Trinamool Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party, are up in arms against each other. Well, the tussle has once again uncovered Didi’s hypocrisy.

Mamata Banerjee sees opportunity in Ganguly
The matter, to put simply is, Ganguly has been refused a second term as the boss of the super-powerful BCCI. Mamata has jumped onto the opportunity, saying that Ganguly is the “pride of Bengal” and him being dropped is a “matter of shame”. Mamata, unaware of the rules and regulations and procedures, has said that Sourav Ganguly should be allowed to contest the election for International Cricket Council.
Well, if Ganguly is to contest for the global body, he needs to be endorsed by the BCCI. As per the recent situation, Mamata thinks that the BCCI won’t endorse Ganguly after the fall out and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must intervene in the matter, said Banerjee.
Now, Banerjee appealing to PM Modi for Ganguly definitely has a mix of politics. As Ganguly is an icon who is respected across all sections in Bengal, he is a living legend. By showing sympathy to Ganguly, Banerjee is trying to reap some political benefits.

Suvendu Adhikari calls out Mamata’s hypocrisy
As seen by the BJP, Mamata Banerjee was a turning an issue of sports administration into a political tussle. The Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adikari said that if Banerjee was so concerned about the former Indian Captain, she must appoint Ganguly as the brand ambassador of Bengal replacing Shahrukh Khan.
Khan has been the brand ambassador of the Bengal since 2012, just a year after Mamata Banerjee’s TMC came to power. BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “Sourav Ganguly is an icon. Roger Binny, too, is a member of the 1983 World Cup winning side. Is he less eligible for that post? BCCI is an autonomous body, unlike sports bodies in West Bengal, which the TMC leaders are helming. The CM is trying to divert attention from various other issues.”
The Congress has also led a scathing attack on the TMC supremo, asking why it took so long for Banerjee to react on the issue. To which the Congress claimed that she must have realised it late that the issue holds importance for Bengalis.
Unravelling the politics behind the whole ruckus
It is quite clear by the entire incident that Banerjee has been trying to politicise the matter in order to arouse the Bengali sentiment against the central establishment. She has been implying that the BJP has attempted to “humiliate” Ganguly as they failed to induct him in the party.
Mamata believes that speaking up for Bengali sentiment will turn some more fence sitters Bengalis into her favour. And her Muslim vote bank is safe with her multiple efforts in that direction, along with Shahrukh Khan. Mamata is playing petty politics by indulging in such a matter with her vote bank agenda. She only did a favour by exposing herself.
