National Unity Day is celebrated every year on 31 October. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India, was born. This year is the 146th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In fact, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played the role of merging 565 princely states into the Union of India.
Out of the 565 princely states that became independent from the British, he had done the work of persuading almost all the princely states to join the Union of India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did many things to maintain the unity of India.

In the year 2014, the Government of India had decided to celebrate the birth of Sardar Patel as National Unity Day on 31 October.

On National Unity Day an oath is taken in all government offices that “I solemnly swear that I dedicate myself to uphold the unity, integrity and security of the country and share this spirit of unity with my fellow countrymen.
