Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This principle is well known to every world leader in modern times. One would expect that keeping people’s interest in mind, they would not process to handle themselves with unquestionable power. But Communists are of different breeds. Millions of corpses are not enough to convince them against it. Currently Xi Jinping is leading Communist revolution.
Jinping ready for the third term
Removing the clouds of doubts around his third term, Xi Jinping will remain Chinese President for at least next five more years. The decision was taken during the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. The Central committee elected Xi as its general secretary, indicating that he has got more loyalists in the rank than senior party leaders like Hu Xin Tao and Wen Jiabao. Moreover, Jinping is trying his best to gain more control on Chinese polity by securing his closest allies in the seven-man Politburo Standing Committee.
Speaking to the press, Jinping said, “China cannot develop without the world, and the world also needs China. After more than 40 years of unflagging efforts towards reform and opening up, we have created two miracles — rapid economic development and long-term social stability.”
Xi-far beyond expectations
Jinping is true when he says that the world needs China. However, the world needs China which is not led by Jinping. Jinping’s tenure has proved to be the worst after Mao’s revolution regime. When he was sworn in as President, Jinping was believed to be calm in demeanor, composed in his speech and calculative in his approach. His track record and relatively humble background (his childhood was majorly fatherless) was an added advantage of his achievements as a committed worker of CCP.
Instead, Jinping turned exactly opposite of what everyone expected him to be. To his credit, Jinping wanted China to impose more muscles on the global stage. According to his calculations, decades long efforts towards economic growth had borne fruit. Xi seemed to be of the opinion that China has made the world reliant on its manufacturing. On the basis of export potential, Jinping wanted countries to bow down to China.
Jingoism on borders and reactions from the world
He started flexing Chinese muscles in the neighborhood. In the South China Sea, Xi Jinping’s China picked fights with Brunei, Taiwan (Republic of China/ROC), Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Jinping wanted to take these countries under grip and then head towards securing domination over big power blocs of Asia like India and Japan. However, the results were not on expected lines.
The countries opposed China’s move and in the Philippines’ case, the country even went on to even win against the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). All these countries are promptly on India’s side at the current juncture of time. Jinping’s bad luck is that his tenure coincided with that of two other nationalistic leaders like Japenese PM Shinzo Abe and Indian PM Modi.
PM Abe was no nonsense man and was openly assertive against the rise of China. He had stopped apologising for Japanese crimes during WWII. China’s authoritarian rise was a big factor behind it. To counter it, he had pitched for QUAD. It did not catch momentum until Jinping decided to backstab India in the Galwan valley. After Chinese unnecessary incursion in the valley, PM Modi took on a mission mode to neglect and alienate Xi on every global forum. Even BRICS came to a standstill for quite some time. Both India and Japan were fully assisted by the USA whose incumbent President Donald Trump had decided to take on China.
Jinping went full authoritarian on dissenters
Meanwhile, back home, xi was also strengthening his powers. As soon as the man took the oath. Xi investigated more than 50 lakh high-ranking and grass-roots officials for corruption. These include Chinese military Commission (CMC) vice-chairmen Xu Caihou and Guo Boxiong, former PSC member and security chief Zhou Yongkang and former Hu Jintao chief aide Ling Jihua. More than 400 officials have been punished till date, a large part of whom are people not supporting Xi.
On the back of fears caused by the anti-corruption drive, Xi was able to change the party’s constitution and secure more than 2 terms for him as President.
Millions of corpses and theories around Coronavirus
Jinping’s adventures were now out of control for the CCP and Chinese polity. It was manifested during and after Covid as well. When Coronavirus entered the scene in 2020, the Xi administration led a worldwide campaign to tell the world that Virus did not come out of a Chinese lab. Western liberal media started to censor the sitting American President in Xi’s favour.
Various scientific papers were published in China’s support, but the voices calling Virus of Chinese origin did not die down. Even to this day, full details about Virus’ origin is not there, but it is also true that denying its Chinese origin with evidence is not possible for China.
Highly unpopular President, but won’t slow down
At least 6.5 million people died due to Covid all across the world. Though official numbers may suggest less, the damage to Chinese lives and economy is much more. Xi’s lockdowns have turned out to be highly unpopular and after decades people were down to protesting on streets. Their main concerns were loss of economic opportunities due to Xi’s policies. Chinese banks did not help the matter by seizing people’s hard-earned money. To quell protests, Jinping resorted to getting tanks to guide Chinese roads.
All of this has made investing highly unpopular in China, which was already hit by Xi’s crackdown on the business sector as a whole and tech sector in particular. Even someone like Jack Ma was not spared after he criticised the Xi administration. No wonder manufacturing bases are shifting to India, Vietnam and other countries.
If Jinping wanted, he could assure the world by signalling his intent to slow down. Even that was not possible for him. Hu Jintao’s humiliating removal during the National Congress was definitely an indication towards Xi getting more authoritarian in his third term. Hu is an influential leader and supposedly a big part of the anti-Xi faction in CCP. Through manhandling him on national television, Xi told his dissenters to prepare for consequences.
