America loved RRR, because it was a visual spectacle, and because it was anti woke

RRR Japan and America

RRR re-release in America: The most remarkable aspect of movies is that they represent a change. People go to halls to have a visual spectacle which is something different from their daily lives. American audiences are no different. They are fed up with wokeism infesting their societies. No wonder anti woke movies are triggering genuine cinema goers to watch them.

RRR is a big hit in America

RRR is not only an Indian hit. The fact that it is being loved by cinema lovers all across the world was clear on the very first day of release. Worldwide audience spent Rs 240 crores to watch the movie. Interestingly, the movie’s plot should have made it highly unpopular in western countries, particularly the places where white population and descendants of colonial Britishers are in charge. But, RRR was highly popular everywhere, including America, the prominent leader of the West.

The American audience in fact poured extra love to Rajamouli’s movie. Despite facing several hurdles in release, the movie has been loved by both audiences and critics. The movie starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR has amassed more than $14.5 million in ticket sales. The fame prompted information dissemination networks to also rate it highly. In their list of “Best Movies of 2022 so far”, the daily USA TODAY ranked it as number 1. It was rated higher than ‘Top Gun maverick’ and ‘The Batman’.

David Sims of The Atlantic even asked American moviemakers to learn from RRR. He wrote, “RRR serves as a reminder of how much modern action usually follows a formula. If wonder is to be consistently found on the big screen, then Hollywood has plenty of new lessons to learn from its best competitor”. Robert Cargill, writer of ‘Doctor Strange’ termed the movie as “craziest, most sincere, weirdest blockbuster”. Other renowned filmmakers like filmmakers Scott Derrickson, James Gunn and The Russo Brothers also had a word or two of praise about the movie.

But the question is how did the RRR movie make such inroads into America? On the face of it, the movie has nothing to attract the American audience. It is showing the British Empire in a negative light, something which Americans are not used to. Additionally, the culture shown in the movie is totally different and it has absolutely no connection with what they have been fed up with by their own movie makers in the last decade or so.

Americans are fed up of wokeism

Somehow, this ended up being the USP of the movie for the American audience. Apparently, Hollywood has been handing them a twisted version of everything for quite some time now. The audience which once marvelled in watching movies like Fight Club, The Shawshank Redemption, Mission Impossible, Batman Franchise, Matrix among others was now being fed up with irrational and anti-scientific Gender ideology under the garb of respect for LGBT people.

The advent of Netflix had worsened the situation. The organisation had decided to follow woke ideology word by word. It abided by every rule book and presented the American audience with twisted versions of reality. Out of nowhere, characters would come out as Gays or lesbians, men would start behaving like women. Not even children were spared. A movie called ‘Cutie’ went as far as sexualising girls as young as 11 years old.

And if original story plots were not enough, the moviemakers went on to ruin old franchises. Ghostbusters, Charlie’s angels, Wonder Woman, Star Wars, Bond franchise, Men in Black, Mortal Combat, Birds of Prey are some of the famous franchises officially ruined by wokeism. The audience got so frustrated that Oscars had to rely on the Will Smith controversy to gain TRP. The Golden Globe was not even televised.

Not being woke is USP of RRR

It took Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick to change scenes. Even that was criticised by wokes for anti-scientific ‘Toxic Masculinity’. But, the country where women are out-earning men just fell in love with what left termed as ‘Toxic Masculinity’.

And then came RRR. It was everything which the audience wanted. At the time when everything in the USA is seen from a political lens, RRR came as a breath of fresh air. There was absolutely no attempt to hide religious leanings of characters. Similarly, the movie makers were open about storylines. A constructive criticism of British raj was welcomed by the audience. An outside factor of Indic based tourism also played its part.

For the unversed, Taj Mahal is no longer the number 1 tourist site for foreigners. It has been replaced by Mahabalipuram. There is more curiosity about real Indic culture than ever. The revival of interest in ancient India is the reason behind it. Characters in RR carried forward ancient Indic culture. Americans saw it and fell in love with it.
