Made in India mobile: As a matter of fact, change is perennial in the existing world. With the passage of time, rulers change, governments change, circumstances change, and prospects change, India’s destiny can be its prime example.
India used to be the world’s largest importer, which meant other than food grains, we were dependent on wide-ranging countries of the world for almost everything. The same happened with mobile Phones. Initially, we used to fulfill our needs by importing handsets which made us dependent on foreign nations. However, with the passage of time, India progressed and now the situation has come that we are exporting a record quantity of mobile phones which are made in India.

Additionally, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajiv Chandrashekhar has clarified that more than 97 percent of the mobile phones used by Indians are now being manufactured in the Indian territory. The Union Minister has also mentioned the same in the CyFY2022 program which was organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). Chandrashekhar said, “In 2014 more than 92 percent of the mobile phones used in India were imported. More than 97 percent of the mobile phones used in India today are made in India. Today we export electronic components worth $12 billion.”
The statistics of the burgeoning growth clearly lays down the success track that India is onto. Recently, The Economic Times reported that India’s monthly mobile phone export figure crossed $1 billion (over Rs 8,200 crore) for the first time. According to the data, mobile phone shipments from April to September have doubled their scores to more than $4.2 billion from $1.7 billion in the year 2021. Earlier, the biggest monthly export of smartphones was worth $770 million in December 2021.

All this has been achieved due to the continuous steps being taken by the Modi government, which includes the success of PLI scheme administered by the government. While comparing its important to note that earlier we used to import mobile phones in large quantities, which posed a direct burden on our foreign reserves because we had to spend dollars to order goods from abroad. Nevertheless, a tremendous change has been seen in the situation, now we have become a self-reliant country. To look at it, the initial imported mobile handsets have also hiked their value by failing to ignore the tax included in it. To put it simply, by the time the product reaches to the general public, its value gets sky rocketed.
In view of all these things, the Modi government came out with the ‘Make in India’ policy and made it clear to foreign companies that if they want to sell their goods in India, then it should be an Indian manufactured product. And this could be seen among the several companies opening their stores in the world’s largest market of handsets.
Today, the result can be seen by everyone. By mobile phones getting cheaper, the reduced burden on foreign reserves, an end of tax-tax game, our increased soft power can be seen as contributors of India proudly raising the tricolor.
