Riots have been a recurring phenomenon that has claimed thousands of human lives, have made hundreds of children orphans, and forced families into poverty. Still, in many parts of India, riots are prevalent. The latest NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) data for 2021, showed that a total of 378 riots took place across the country, with Jharkhand topping the chart.

What does NCRB data say about crimes in India?
The National Crime Records Bureau released its annual report ‘Crime in India on August 29, for crime-related statistics in 2021. Overall, 2021 saw a 7.6 per cent decline in the number of cases registered, as compared to the previous year. However, crime statistics do not always tell the full story. Also, lower crimes reported in an area during a particular period are not a guarantee of safety, as NCRB data is itself dependent on the number of FIRs registered. Hence it would not be an exaggeration to say that crimes committed will be more than that registered.
Jharkhand tops the chart
In a total of 378 riots that took place across the country, a total of 100 took place in Jharkhand just in a span of one year. Jharkhand was followed by Maharashtra (77) and Bihar (51).
However, the overall number of cases of rioting registered in the state is 1,834. There have been widespread communal clashes in the state. Be it Ram Navami or Hanuman Jayanti, every festival celebration has claimed lives. Jharkhand becoming the hotbed of crimes can be directly attributed to the current JMM-Congress government with CM Hemant Soren at the helm of affairs. The policy of appeasement for mobilising votes can be seen as the main reason behind the high crime rate in the state.
Jharkhand: A hotbed of crime under Soren
The state of Jharkhand has seen a spike in crime rate. Other than communal riots, crimes against children are also on the rise in the state. A total of 1,867 crimes were registered in the above category, which was 1,795 in 2020 and 1,674 in 2019. To add on, 8,110 crimes against women were registered in the year 2021. 901 girls between the age group 18 to 30 and 218 women in the age group of 30 and 45 years were reportedly raped in 2021.
Despite scoring the highest points in the NCRB’s annual report, the religious clashes are not going to stop any time soon, as the clashes are continuous in the current year as well. The most violent one was on June 10, when Muslims came out in large numbers alleging blasphemy, resulting in 2 deaths and 24 people getting severely injured.
The current Jharkhand government seems to have compromised with the progress of the state as peace is the requisite for progress and rule of law is the bare minimum to maintain peace and security.
