Chhote Bahubalis in the age of social media – Arvind Limbavali must be punished

It’s a fact of utter despair that even in the modern day of the 21st century, women find it hard to satisfy their security concerns. Even after 75 years of Independence, we get to hear rape, thrashing, abducting, and other such cases where it reflects the dark side of the growing Indian society. It’s even more reprehensible when the top officials are found involved in such crimes. Recent evidence of this can be found in Karnataka.

MLA Arvind Limbavali threatening a woman

Recently, a video of Karnataka’s senior legislator of the Bhartiya Janata Party went viral. In the video, the politician can be seen scolding and threatening a woman, who tried hard to reach out to the authority for her complaint regarding the demolition of her property over an encroachment allegation.

The incident took place when Arvind Limbavali, BJP MLA from Mahadevapura was on the round in his assembly constituency, which had seen severe waterlogging due to heavy rainfall in the past few days. On the other hand, a woman named Ruth Sagay Mary, a Congress party worker approached him and asked him to look into her complaint of land encroachment in the Mahadevapura constituency.

Taking a look at the background, the Karnataka government had earlier said encroached properties that are blocking rainwater flow will be demolished. In light of this, the woman was also issued a notice for the demolition, but she claimed the land belonged to her and she had documents to prove the same.

Interestingly, this incident came months after Arun Limbavali’s daughter Renuka, was caught on camera misbehaving with the police personnel, who stopped her for speeding car and driving rashly in Bengaluru.

Misbehaving MLA gets thrashed by other politicians

In the buzzing social media video, the MLA Arvind Limbavali can be seen snatching a paper from the woman’s hand when she tried to hand over the complaint letter to him. In addition, Limbavali inappropriately said, “Don’t you have any shame or manners? Enough or I will have to speak to you in a different language.” The woman kept urging the MLA to see the document while opining, “It is not a government land, sir. It is ours.” However, Limbavali responded by asking a lady police officer to take her away.

In response to this incident, various politicians accused Limbavali of his disrespectful behavior. Senior Congress legislator Dinesh Gundu Rao said, “The MLA should not have spoken to a woman like that. This is uncivilized behavior.” Apart from him, Priyank Kharge, Congress party MLA and party’s state media in-charge said, “Is MLA Limbavali a rowdy? He does not have the patience to receive petitions and listen to woes.”

As appropriately said by Swami Vivekananda that there is no chance of the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. A bird can’t fly on one wing.  It’s a matter of shame for the world’s largest democracy that it believed “guard of citizens” are themselves misbehaving with them.

Increasing cases of assaulting women

For those unaware, there have been numerous such cases of women facing a hard time in society. Rape, abducting, murders, exploitation, and the continued list have become a routine to grab the newspaper’s headline.

A report made rounds in August 2022 when an Uttar Pradesh politician named Shrikant Tyagi allegedly assaulted a woman after a spat broke out between them inside the Sector 93B housing society. He was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty), after the viral video which showed Tyagi assaulting the woman and using abusive words for her husband and derogatory remarks about her.

More recently, three Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers were arrested after a video showing them assaulting a woman in public, went viral. It was noted that the woman had objected to the local MNS workers who were installing a pole for an advertisement board in front of her shop in the Kamathipura area of central Mumbai, which led to a tussle between them.

All these cases among others contribute to the highest ranking of India in the list of dangerous countries for women, according to the 2019 survey. To add to it, over 400 thousand crimes against women were reported in 2019 alone. As per Statista, in the year 2020, there were seven thousand cases of assault against women. Out of this, nearly 1.8 thousand cases were reported in the capital city of Delhi alone in 2020.

Social Media as another watchdog

In the modern era of technology and social media, the people attempting assault or any other kind of crime will no longer be able to escape from the surrounding social media network. Social media is now acting as a watchdog over the people who try to get away with crimes committed. But it’s no longer the case.

Just as the Karnataka MLA Arvind Limbavali assaulting a woman was caught on camera, social media and the advent of the internet are now a rescue for women. The so-called “Bahubalis” will no longer be able to get away with their thing. With social media exposing every wrongdoing, BJP will not tolerate disrespect against women and will punish the concerned official if required.
