It was weeks ago when Adani pipped Bill Gates to be the fourth richest man on the planet. Now after a recent surge in wealth, it looks like he will soon beat the e-commerce giant Bezos. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gautam Adani is the third richest person (As on 8 Sep 2022) in the world. The Ahmedabad-based tycoon is the top gainer year-to-date, with a net worth that has soared by almost $60 billion to $148 billion.
Adani: From Unknown to Top Three
Just a few years ago, Gautam Adani was mostly unknown outside of India. But this week, the Indian billionaire, a dropout from college who first tried his luck as a diamond trader before switching to coal, became the third richest person in the world. The 60-year-old Adani has invested the last five years in growing his coal-to-ports conglomerate by foraying into a variety of industries, including data centers, cement, media, and alumina. The group today manages the largest private-sector coal miner, city-gas distributor, and operator of ports and airports in India. Environmentalists have opposed the company’s Carmichael mine in Australia, but it vowed in November to invest $70 billion in renewable energy making it the largest generator of renewable energy in the world.

Lone Asian to do so
It’s the first time an Asian has entered the top three richest list. Fellow Asian giants such as Mukesh Ambani or Jack Ma have never made it so far.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his net worth has nearly doubled, rising from $64. 8 billion to $141. 4 billion, making Adani the third richest person on the planet, during a year in which many billionaires throughout the world have lost their fortunes.
