The whole nation apologised to Nambi Narayanan after R Madhavan starrer ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ was released at the box office. The film depicted the story of the scientist Nambi Narayanan and his painful journey. The film turned out to be a massive success but still, it was subjected to criticism only because it displayed the truth as it is.
Turns out, the ex-ISRO scientists too have come out spewing venom against Narayanan. They have alleged that claims made in ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect‘ starring actor Madhavan are “bluff” and “devoid of facts”.
Scientists question the claims
Earlier this week, former ISRO scientists including Dr AE Muthunayagom, the former Director of ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), D Sasikumaran, former Deputy Director, Cryogenic Engine), the former Project Director, Cryogenic Project, and a few others interacted with the media in Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram.
They hit out against the film and claims made in the movie. According to the ex-colleagues of Nambi, including D Sasikumaran, “90 per cent of what is said in the film is false.” For those unaware, Sasikumaran was also arrested in connection with the ISRO espionage case.
“We are forced to tell the public certain matters as Nambi Narayanan has been defaming ISRO and other scientists through the movie, and also through television channels,” they said.
“90 per cent of what has been told is not true. Many former scientists after seeing the film has called up me and said all the credit has been taken by Nambi,” Dr. Muthunayagam, former director, LPSC stated.
“I have asked for certain details from the present Chairman of ISRO on the claims Nambi has made in the film about the cryogenic engine being brought from Tashkent. This is also false and once I get the details I have asked, I will take appropriate steps,” he added.
Rocketry is ‘fake’ for scientists
The scientists seem to have a thing against Narayanan. They did not stop criticising Narayanan and the film Rocketry as it bravely portrayed the life and struggles of the former ISRO scientist. The scientists claimed that not Vikram Sarabhai but Muthunayagom had sent Nambi Narayanan to Princeton University in the US for his Masters.
They also denied the claims made in the film that Narayanan once corrected APJ Abdul Kalam. They stated that it wasn’t possible as they hardly worked together.
Not only this, but the claims made in the movie that Narayanana’s arrest in the ISRO Spy case had led to a delay in the development of the cryogenic engine has also been refuted by scientists. On the contrary, these scientists claim that “when the work began on it in 1980s, Narayanan was not at all part of the team.”

They tried to inform that the cryogenic technology was developed under the direction of EVS Namboothiri. Muthunayakam said that he made Nambi the project director in LPSC in 1990 and in 1994, the latter had applied for voluntary retirement. After his retirement, he was arrested in the spy case.
If these scientists are to be believed, the majority of the developments in cryogenic propulsion took place in ISRO only after Narayanan left the LPSC in 1994. When asked about the Padma award that was given to Narayanan, Dr Muthunayagom said that it was not for his work in ISRO but because of his Delhi connections.
Nambi Narayanan – an Ivy League scientist
India achieved some success with the Cryogenic technology only in December 2014 when an experimental flight of the GLSV (Mk-III) carried an indigenous Cryogenic stage like the one that is being used by ISRO today. The first developmental flight of the GSLV Mk-III, boasting of the indigenous Cryogenic technology, was launched only three years ago. Nambi Narayanan is an Ivy League scientist and can be referred to as the brain behind liquid fuel powered rockets. He was the one who dreamt of competing with the ‘superpowers’ by seeing directly into their eyes. The genius mind who ditched NASA, the one whose patriotism knows no boundaries, was humiliated by the petty politicians and police officers with the aim of destroying his career.
Nambi’s intelligence has been portrayed well in the movie Rocketry. This is what is affecting his haters and others as well. While there is no proof that the claims made by the scientists are true, we must remember Narayanan’s effort in developing his own nation.
