Sanjay Dutt should have retired after Munna Bhai

What if you do not retire at the accurate time? Well, you become Sanjay Dutt. I am sure you would agree that Sanjay Dutt is one of the actors who has aged gracefully. Like any other actor of his age, he still has the right physique and is fit. His piercing eyes, great voice, and looks can easily dominate others whenever he is on the screen. He has great facial hair. Even at this age, he does not have saggy arms. He is all a casting director would love to cast. However, Sanjay Dutt is reduced to a joker now and should have retired after Munna Bhai.

Shamshera failed to make a mark

Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera has fallen flat at the box office. There were a lot of expectations from the film but it has done average business during its first weekend. Shamshera had an opening of Rs 10.25 crore on Day 1, which is way lesser than what was expected. The film did not even take off during the weekend and managed to earn a mere Rs 20 crore. According to estimates, Shamshera, till now, has collected only Rs. 32 crores.

The above collection clearly indicates that the audience is not impressed with the action-thriller. This also vindicates that Sanjay Dutt is more the choice of the people, especially in the roles like Shuddh Singh, which is an extended version of what we saw in KGF 2 and Agneepath. For those unversed, he is playing the role of an evil, merciless and cold-hearted man named Shuddh Singh in KGF 2.

Dutt and his phenomenal journey

Sanjay Dutt, undoubtedly, is a phenomenal actor. Though he was not unfamiliar with controversies at that time, but when it comes to his job as an actor, he did it exceptionally well. His movies ‘Naam’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Khalnayak’, ‘Sadak’ and ‘Vaastav’ are still recognised as one of the best ever performances in the Indian cinema. Even the aspiring actors are given an example of these movies to teach them what acting really is!

Dutt made a spectacular entry in Hindi cinema with the 1981 film Rocky. He was later seen in the films such as Vidhaata, Imaandaar, Jeete Hain Shaan Se, Ilaaka, Taaqatwar and Thaanedar. But, his character Ballu in Subhash Ghai’s super hit Khalnayak made him the star he is, today. However, Sanjay Dutt reached the pinnacle of success after he was seen in the ‘Munna Bhai’ series.

Life after Munna Bhai for Sanju

Honestly, it was after Munna Bhai that Sanjay Dutt should have started shifting away from the lead roles to experimenting with other roles. Then, he was given an opportunity in 2012 by a director named Karan Malhotra. He wanted to make a remake of ‘Agneepath’ and gave the role of iconic ‘Kancha Cheena’ to Sanjay Dutt.

How do you fit an almost legendary character in a modern story? He looked funny, acted funny and his dialogues were ridiculous. However, he got rave reviews for his acting skills in the movie. This is probably the reason why Sanjay Dutt jumped into a different dimension altogether. Since then, he has not looked back. Doesn’t matter if you give him a bald head or a full crop of hair, a turban or a toupee, big beard or cropped beard, big moustache or cropped moustache, a Kavach or a Kurta, he will manage to look aggressive.

Read more: Sanjay Dutt has played the most irritating and over-the-top characters in the last 5 years

Believe me, this is exactly why the characters played by him in the last few movies are extremely irritating. Beginning with PK in which he was playing the character of Bhairon Singh, his cameo was worst written and was an absolute disaster. In Kalank, he was given specs and a cropped beard to look effective as Balraj Chaudhary but ended up portraying teleported version of Yash Raichand of K3G.

He was next seen in Panipat, which has to be the worst period film ever. Sanjay Dutt as Ahmad Shah Abdali never acted the part and played Sanjay Dutt 2.0 on screen. Next in the queue is Ajay Devgn starrer Bhuj, which is the biggest disaster of his career and Sanjay Dutt as an axe-wielding semi clad Ranchhor Das Pagi was unbearable to watch. His role was ridiculous.

Ever since he got rave reviews for his ‘Kancha China’ in Agneepath, Sanjay Dutt leapt into a different dimension altogether. In my humble opinion, Kancha China was a laughable character. pic.twitter.com/mCG8bbXkP2

— Atul Kumar Mishra (@TheAtulMishra) July 24, 2022

The most popular character played by him this year was Adheera in KGF-2. He looked like a Game-of-Throneish-ridiculous-supervillain. He looked perfect as the nemesis of Yash, but his character was terribly written. In Akshay Kumar’s disastrous ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, Sanjay Dutt played Kaka Kanha. Trust me; it was an extremely irritating character.

He was last seen in the big screen as Shuddh Singh in-soon-to-be-declared disaster Shamshera. For the movie, he was given a semi bald head, a big mustache and beard, a Shikha coupled with a big Tripund and Teeka on his forehead. While it was a poorly written character, it also hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus of the nation, which contributed a lot towards why the movie failed to attract cinemagoers to the box office.

It is time for him to retire at a time when he is still a star rather than becoming a joke because of the roles he is being continuously offered. He is a phenomenal actor and should retire as one.
