Politicians have earned disrepute of being a hypocrite. They often take contrasting stands in public and behind closed doors. The grand old party, Congress, seems to be the champion of this ugly facet of politics. They often speak ill of the rival parties, even on issues that it too undertakes in its governing states. But the recent doublespeak of the Congress party boomeranged badly. It soon became a cause of mockery for the party and its senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Congress’s hypocrisy exposed thoroughly
On Monday, 25th July, the General Secretary of AICC in charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tried to politically cash in on the protest of Delhi Anganwadi workers. She extended her support to the protesting workers. She made a tweet lambasting the Delhi government for taking an unjust decision.

Criticising the Arvind Kejriwal government she said that a few days back the AAP government increased the salary of its Legislatures but now it is taking unjust decisions. She categorically said that demanding respectable honorarium is not a crime. In her tweet she attached a snippet with the headline of the unjust decision taken by the Kejriwal government. According to the news snippet, Kejriwal’s AAP government sacked over 800 Delhi Anganwadi Workers for asking for a respectable honorarium.
pic.twitter.com/ZAq0V7Sudt

However, this attempt to score political brownie points backfired on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (DSAWHU) issued a statement criticising the hypocrisy of the Congress party. The union DSAWHU lashed out at her and exposed the Congress’ doublespeak on the matter.
In its statement, it highlighted that at a time when Priyanka Gandhi is ‘supporting’ the struggle of Delhi Anganwadi workers, Congress’ own Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi is advocating on behalf of the Delhi government against the Anganwadi workers.
The Union called Priyanka’s attempt as “nothing but false consolations”. It further went on to label the “sympathy” of Congress as a “farce”. It said that the Congress party is raising the issue only with the intention of making “electoral gains” out of it.
DSAWHU said, though the Congress raised their issues through press conferences in Punjab and Delhi, these were “nothing but false consolations.” It added that the “sympathy” of the Congress towards Anganwadi workers was only a “farce” and that the party was raising the issue only for “electoral gains.”

Don’t do political sloganeering, instead act on it
Further, the union questioned the intentions of the Congress party. It made a point saying that if Congress is really sympathetic to these demands it should lead by example.
It said, “If the Congress is so sympathetic to the demand for a respectable honorarium then why is it not increasing the honorariums of the scheme workers to ₹ 25,000 in the states where it is the ruling government?”.
“If the Congress is so sympathetic to the demand for a respectable honorarium then why is it not increasing the honorariums of our workers in the states where it is the ruling government?” @dsawhu members asked.

With the advent of Social media, such doublespeak of parties comes out quickly. This has prevented parties from throwing dust in the voters’ eyes. That is why at several occasions, politicians find moments to criticise social media and want to tame it. This is only a lone incident of Congress’ hypocrisy. Its dynamic leader Rahul Gandhi does a flip flop on Hindutva. During the Gujarat election days he became a staunch Janeudhari Brahmin and on other times he spoke ill of several customs and traditions of Hindus and his continuous monologue against Hindutva is a prime example of his hypocrisy in the name of Soft Hindutva.
The grand old party should realise that by taking such hypocritic stands, it will achieve nothing. If it keeps on doing similar doublespeak it will soon be fade into history.
