In Udaipur, two jihadis in broad daylight hacked a Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal to death. In a bid to terrorise the nation, the Jihadi duo videographed this act of terror. They spread the horrific video in their Whatsapp group, and soon the murder video went viral. While the majority of the nation was aghast at the gut-wrenching images and video; Jihadis and sadistic people rejoiced and justified the beheading. Thankfully, the government has taken quick action against it.
Government directs Social Media Companies to take action
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued an order for the social media companies, regarding the Udaipur gruesome murder. In its circular, the Ministry had asked the Social Media companies to remove all the content that encourage or justify such dastardly act of terror. It has given such orders so as to prevent any incitement or provocation, and to restore harmony in the society.

The official order said, “Through this notice, you are directed to forthwith ensure that as part of your obligation of due diligence, safety and trust, you proactively and immediately remove any and all content (either in the form of a text message, audio, video, photo or any other form) that seem to encourage/glorify/justify this murder and killing with a view to prevent any incitement and disruption of public order and to restore public peace and harmony”.

As per The Indian Express, a spokesperson for Facebook and Instagram parent Meta said that they have flagged the incident as violating. This means that it will remove accounts belonging to the perpetrators or any content that justifies or praises the gory Udaipur act or its perpetrators.
While all such regulatory actions through Social Media are done under Section 69(A), seeing the urgency, the government has not taken this legal recourse. The government official informed that it has been done by a unilateral advisory as the content was too horrific and disturbing.
The official said, “This is a unilateral advisory issued by the ministry because the content related to the killing is extremely disturbing and provocative. The volume of content that glorifies or justifies the murder can be large due to which issuing take-down orders under Section 69(A) would take some time, so the ministry issued this notice to social media companies because this type of content should not be allowed to be on their platforms”.

It is good to see that the government acted swiftly to remove all the content justifying the horrific murder. But it needs to take similar stringent actions on persons shielding, supporting, funding and justifying such acts and its perpetrators.
