Nihal Sarin, an Indian chess prodigy who achieved grandmaster status at the age of 14, is currently ranked among his nation’s top 10 players (as of April 2021). Nihal took home the U-10 World Blitz Championship that year. He won the U-10 World Youth Chess Championship the following year with a score of 9/11.

Mathew P. Joseph Pottoore, Nihal’s first coach, introduced him to the game and helped him develop a passion for it. He was then assisted in honing his abilities by Mr. M.B. Muralidharan, Prof. N.R. Anil Kumar, Mr. C.T. Pathrose, and K.K. Manikantan. From 2013 to 2015, E.P. Nirmal trained Nihal, assisting him in transitioning from a young prospect to a rising player.
From 2013 through 2019, Dimitri Komarov served as his trainer. Since 2016, he has collaborated with Srinath Narayanan. Since 2016, Nihal has started developing his game on his own. Nihal has been receiving instruction from Viswanathan Anand as a member of the WestBridge-Anand Chess Academy since late 2020.

Nihal Sarin was born on July 13, 2004, in Thrissur, Kerala, India. Nihal’s mother, Shijin Ammanam Veetil Ummar, is a psychiatrist, and his father, Sarin Abdulsalam, is a dermatologist. His early years were spent in Kottayam.
At the age of six, Nihal started playing chess. When Nihal was a student at Kottayam’s Excelsior English School, his father gave him a chess set and his grandfather A. A. Ummar taught him the rules so that he wouldn’t be bored during the summer months. Nihal had formal instruction in chess from Mathew P. Joseph Pottoore, the school’s chess coach, who first gave lessons once a week.
He competed simultaneously against 112 players of all ages in Thodupuzha, Kerala, when he was 10 years old, winning every game.
In March 2015, he also participated as a special guest contestant in the Malayalam TV game program Aswamedham. Nihal periodically conducts Simultaneous Exhibitions in an effort to spread the game of chess among amateur players.
