Many of the cricketing experts have rightfully said that, ‘The longer format of Cricket is the Real Test of character of any player. It tests the fitness, temperament and technique of the player to the fullest.’ So, if a player on his own has the capacity to win or change the balance of the game in the longer format, then that player is gonna rule the 22-yard pitch for a long time.
One player that stands out tall in the entire Indian cricketing fraternity is the bowling maestro Jasprit Bumrah. The career of the ace pace bowler has been on a constant meteoric rise. Contrary to that the former skipper Virat Kohli is going through the roughest phase of his cricketing career.
Ironically, it was Virat, during his peak time, who once was arrogant or ignorant enough to disregard the talent of champion bowler Bumrah. That is why many cricketing fans and experts are linking the fate of the cricketing duo. They are taking pot-shots at the dipping form of Virat Kohli and calling it the cycle of Karma for Kohli.
Boom! Boom! Bumrah!
The International Cricket Council (ICC) constantly amend the rules of the game but it is blamed that every time it is in the interest of the batsmen. In the quicker format, it is an open secret that the balance between bat and ball hangs heavily in favour of the bat. Even after that, few bowlers stand out tall that can at ease shatter this imbalance and knocks the stump out at will. India is fortunate enough to have the best of the best bowler in their side. You guessed it right; we are talking about the World Number 1 ODI bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.

The fame BOOM BOOM Bumrah, with his incredible performance in the ongoing English series, has topped the latest ICC men’s bowler ranking. Leaving behind all the other contemporary greats he has reclaimed the top position after a gap of two years.
In February 2020, he was outperformed by Kiwi’s deadly fast bowler Trent Boult to get the top ICC spot. Till then he remained at the top for straight 730 days, which made him the only Indian bowler to do so.
The pace bowler, who leads the bowling attack, got the opportunity to lead the side in the longer format. Keeping aside the result and last day’s average performance, he led the team from the front and even performed miracles. He smacked the ball all round the stadium and scripted a world record through his bat. Yes world record from his Bat. He decimated the confidence of Stuart Broad who leaked 35 runs in that over. Obviously, the spell with the ball was phenomenal as always. Again this successful display of Captaincy by Bumrah promises that he can achieve what the likes of former skipper Kohli couldn’t as a captain.

This must have made Kohli to reminisce his words again and again. Earlier, in a casual interaction with former cricketer Parthiv Patel, Kohli had dismissed Bumrah as a nobody. He said, “‘Chord na yaar, ye Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge?’ (Leave it. What will such players do?)”. It is obvious that Kohli had no malice towards Bumrah then or now, but his fans went whole hog against Parthiv Patel. They started pouring verbal abuses at the former Wicket keeper for revealing Kohli’s word on Bumrah. But his fans must have realised what Bumrah-Vumrah can do. Currently, whatever you may want to say, Bumrah is outperforming Kohli in all aspects and in fun can utter the same words for Kohli, but he won’t. As we should not judge a person in their highs and lows. Highs and lows are part and parcel of life.
Technical reason behind Bumrah’s success, unique bowling style
The bowling genius Bumrah is known to deliver at key moments of the match. Bumrah is a champion bowler when it comes to ball yorkers at will. Thanks to his unique action, he has been successful in deceiving the batsmen. His ability to swing the ball in either direction always caught the batsmen second guessing. Once Indian fast bowling legend Zaheer Khan explained the reason behind Bumrah’s success. He said that though he has an unconventional bowling action but because of his right biomechanics he is less prone to injuries from his bowling action.
He also explained that Bumrah has a great shoulder-hip-foot positioning alignment. On top of that his economical (short) run-up coupled with high arm delivery at the top of front foot gives him more power at the crease.
IIT Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal decoded the success behind Bumrah’s bowling action. He credited the bowling genius for a great spin ratio, which decides the direction of the Magnus force. Bumrah can also dip the ball quicker than many other fast bowlers.
A dipping ball moving at great pace makes it extremely difficult for batsmen to judge its trajectory and hit it and it becomes a wicket-taking ball.
Bumrah clicks constant speed around 145 kmph coupled with a rotational speed of 1000 RPM and a very stable seam position. This gives a spin ratio of nearly 0.1 for the cricket ball. This spin ratio puts the ball into the reverse Magnus effect regime. A downward force on a cricket ball moving at Bumrah’s pace causes it to dip very sharply and therefore batsmen find it difficult to pick his deliveries
These all arsenal makes Bumrah’s bowling more lethal. The yorker king Bumrah with quick pace and ability to swing both ways is here to conquer the 22-yard pitch and lead India to new highs. We as Indians are fortunate enough to see many more great spells from this bowling maestro and stumps flying high. So, from now on no one should enquire what Bumrah-Vumrah can do?
