In the past, India has been found wanting to make its name in sports at the global stage. As sports at the global stage has become a symbol of national prestige. But, thankfully, things are changing in India and changing for the good. The government has been focusing keenly on athletes and Sports infrastructure. Also, as the domain and frontier of sports is changing rapidly the government is coming up with plans to make India a sporting superpower.
India gets first National Air Sports Policy
The indifference and step motherly treatment of the previous governments pulled India back and perform below its full potential. But now, the current government is working proactively to promote every sport within the country. Evidently, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has unveiled India’s first National Air Sports Policy (NASP 2022) to promote the niche Air sports field in the country.

According to the new NASP 2022, a four tier structure will govern the air sports in the country. The Air Sports Federation of India (ASFI) will be the apex body for all the air sports. National, Regional and district level associations will also be set up in India as other tiers.

According to the Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, this will help India to generate Rs 8000 crore annual revenue and over 1 lakh direct jobs. He said, “It is time for India to take its rightful place and become the global capital of air sports. We want to create an environment of adventure, thrill and sports in the country. For this, we will leverage the energy of our youth below the age of 35. India has a huge geographical expanse and therefore you have the ability in this country to have the widest diversity of air sports”.
Which sports come under the category of Air sports and key objectives of this policy?
As the name suggests, Air sports encompasses various sporting activities involving the medium of air. These include sports like air-racing, aerobatics, aero modeling, drones, paragliding, paramotoring and skydiving among others. The policy aims to deliver several key objectives which includes promoting niche air sports, adoption of good international practices, clarity of governance structure, building champions in aero-sports and development-manufacturing of air sports equipment in India and making India Atmanirbhar in Air Sports.
It is great to see that the government has taken proactive initiative in niche air sports. It is infusing confidence in youth of the country to take up and make names for themselves in adventure sports like Skydiving or paragliding. With an abundance of youth motivated towards adventure sports and governments push India soon will be a leading nation in the world of air sports. The time is near when India will have its own world class Skydiving and other air sports infrastructure.
