India has secured a special position in the world. But the countries using propaganda as their main source of soft power are unable to comprehend India’s success. They always try to portray India in the bad light. The recent fallacious report publishing Environmental Performance Index can be considered another repeated attempt to target India.
Another report defames India
On June 6, the Yale and Columbia universities released an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022, which ranked India at the bottom position among the 180 countries. Out of these, India is in the bottom five with a score of 18.9. It is marked among the most air polluters in the world.
Countries with better numbers included Myanmar (19.4), Vietnam (20.1), Bangladesh (23.1), Pakistan (24.6), Nepal (28.3), and Sri Lanka (34.7). On the other hand, Denmark was ranked first with a score of 77.9 followed by the United Kingdom (77.7) and Finland (76.5).
The EPI is an international ranking system of countries based on their environmental health. The Yale Centre for Environmental Law and Policy and Columbia University Centre in collaboration with World Economic Forum has published this report.

EPI targetting India
The EPI 2022 has assessed the countries based on 40 performance indicators. The report said that it has used the most recent data and thus it showcases how the countries are progressing towards meeting internationally established sustainability targets for environmental issues. These indicators are under the categories of climate change performance, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality.
The EPI 2022 report said, “Many other nations are headed in the wrong direction, with rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions in major countries like China, India, and Russia.”
The report can clearly be seen as discriminatory against India. It is trying to present a false notion that India is lacking in the notion of sustainable development. It’s evident that India cannot attain the last position in the Environmental Performance Index. When countries like Pakistan, Iraq, Haiti, Bangladesh, Sudan, and many more are ranked above India, then it indicates that it’s a bogus report demeaning India.
West’s procalims what suits them
The report also indicated that India is among the countries which will account for over 50% of the residual global greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 if current trends hold. The report said, “A total of 24 countries will be responsible for nearly 80% of 2050 emissions unless decision-makers strengthen climate policies and emissions trajectories change.”
However, the Indian Environment Ministry has challenged the report saying that the indicators in the assessment are based on unfounded assumptions.

MoEFCC rebuts the report
In the wake of hot heated controversies encircling India, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) said, “The Environmental Performance index 2022 released recently has many indicators based on unfounded assumptions. Some of these indicators used for assessing performance are extrapolated and based on surmises and unscientific methods.”
Challenging the false findings of the EPI report 2022, the MOEFCC further added, “A new indicator in the Climate Policy objective is Projected GHG Emissions levels in 2050. This is computed based on the average rate of change in emission of the last 10 years instead of modeling that takes into account a longer time period, the extent of renewable energy capacity and use, additional carbon sinks, energy efficiency, etc. of respective countries. Both forests and wetlands of the country are crucial carbon sinks which have not been factored in while computing the projected GHG emissions trajectory up to 2050 given by EPI 2022.”
The developed countries especially the west are targeting to achieve the net zero Carbon emissions by 2050. But, developing nations like India which are emerging as the dominion in the world in every aspect need time to become the keepers of sustainable development. That is why it has explicitly stated that the country won’t go carbon neutral before 2070.
In regard to this PM Modi had announced earlier during his Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition Centre’s COP26 climate summit that India will achieve its target of net zero emissions by 2070. Since India’s net-zero target is 2070, MoEFCC reaffirmed that its unfair to compare apples and oranges. The Ministry said, “comparing it to countries with projected 2050 emissions level in 2050 equal to or below zero receiving the maximum score is against the principle of Equity as enshrined in Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).”
The MOEFCC also stated that the weightage of indicators among which India performed well was reduced thus. This can be instanced from the Black Carbon growth rate indicator where the score of India has improved to 100 in 2022 from 32 in 2020, whereas the overall weight of the indicator is reduced to 0.0038 in 2022 from 0.018 in 2020. The Indian government said, “There is no specific rationale that has been adopted for the selection of weights. It seems that the selection of weights is entirely based on the publishing agency’s choice which is not suitable for a global index.”

The hidden reality of India which is covered by the world
It is also significant to note that the Yale and Columbia universities are private autonomous institutions. And this clarifies that the analyses published by them are the opinionated statistics of the world. “There is no specific rationale that has been adopted for the selection of weights. It seems that the selection of weights is entirely based on the publishing agency’s choice which is not suitable for a global index”, said the Modi government.
Any intellectual with an understanding of the west’s organized propaganda will be able to demarcate the lines between truth and falsity. India’s new incumbent move towards mixing ethanol with petrol is for safeguarding the depleting environment. Its success in developing electric vehicles for the preservation of the environment is not a secret to the world.
It is true that India will take time to get to the stage where it can fully participate in the process. But, it has done more than what it could do. Unfortunately, it has become a practice for the world in framing India as standing against the preservation of future civilizations.
