Acting Career
Before electing to make her acting debut in Nagabharana’s Neela, Gayathri turned down offers from notable directors like Arjun and started her career with director K. Balachander’s teleserial Azhukku Veshti.
Neela is a Kannada movie about a cancer-stricken tribal singer. The International Film Festival of India chose it as one of the thirty-two Indian movies to screen. Gayatri’s performance earned her a Cinema Express Award, and a critic praised it for being a “matured performance that gives the sense of her being an accomplished actress.”
After being persuaded by producer KRG to appear in his Manadhai Thirudivittai alongside Prabhu Deva, she made her Tamil film debut.
After the film’s release, Gayatri commented that the part she had originally agreed to play in the movie had been changed to one that Kausalya was portraying. Despite her inclusion in the song “Manjakattu Mynaa,” the movie was a commercial disaster.
Her Telugu cinema debut was in Aaduthu Paaduthu with Srikanth, and she then appeared in Shree with Suriya in a supporting role. Gayatri revealed that her part was cut by the editors during post-production. Before appearing in a number of unsuccessful Kannada and Malayalam movies, she played a small role in Vaseegara opposite Vijay and Sneha.

Gayatri Jayaraman received her education at the Church Park and Adarsh Vidyalaya in Chennai. Up till the age of four, she was raised in Shahabad, a town close to Gulbarga, until her family moved to Madras. Gayatri initially wanted to become a doctor, and despite earning a 94 percent in her board exams, she was unable to obtain a medical seat. As a result, she started studying for a B.Sc. at IGNOU, in life science.
Gayatri managed her time well between modeling and school and continued on to SRM College in Chennai to pursue physiotherapy.
Early Experiences and thoughts
She explained that “the average life of an actor on film is a maximum of four years” and that “she can always return to physiotherapy once my career as an actress is done” in relation to her decision to pursue credentials at the same time.
Her initial modeling jobs were with Nalli Silks, then she worked with Kumaran Silks, Pothys, and Chennai Silks. She also competed in beauty pageants, winning Miss Tamil Nadu in 1997 and Miss South India in 1998.
Gayatri Jayaraman advanced to the Femina Miss India 2000 finals after being chosen as one of the 26 finalists from 8,000 entrants, where she eventually placed fourth.
She has also worked as a video jockey on television, appearing for Fanta on “Telephone Manipol” on Vijay TV and “Ilamai Pudhumai” on Sun TV.

She wed Samit Sawhny, a businessman and author, in a modest and private ceremony in the Andaman Islands in May 2007.
