It was horrific and troubled three decades for the family of late Gurnam Singh as they saw Sidhu hosting comedy shows, touring India and abroad, boasting and giggling about himself and his visions. But as they say, ‘the wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine’. There will not be a better case of poetic Justice than the case of Navjot Singh Sidhu. Without any remorse or guilt, being the reason for someone’s death, he shamelessly judged comedy shows and pretended to be ‘holier than thou’, but finally his past sins have caught up and he will now languish in jail for the crime.
Justice delayed but Justice delivered at last
Finally, after a long wait of 33 years, the family of late Gurnam Singh got Justice with the help of our Honourable Supreme Court. While hearing a review petition, the bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Sanjay K Kaul admitted that the earlier 2018 verdict was unduly lenient in letting off Sidhu with a fine of mere Rs 1000. The bench remedied the blunder and pronounced a one-year jail term for the Cricketer-turned Politician. The bench said, “We do believe that the indulgence was not required to be shown at the stage of sentence by only imposing a sentence of fine and letting the respondent go without any imposition of sentence.”

For a reminder, On December 27, 1988, Sidhu and Rupinder Singh Sandhu parked their vehicle in the middle of the road in Patiala. When a 65-year-old Gurnam Singh asked the duo to move the vehicle aside, drunk with arrogance, Sidhu beat the old Gurnam black and blue. He ran away with the keys of Mr Singh so that the old man couldn’t get any medical help. He did this cruel act knowingly, letting the old man die from his mortal wounds.
Navjot Singh Sidhu: A Power-hungry Narcissist
The Power-hungry Sidhu has had a tremendous career. But because of his self-centred nature and narcissistic ways, he was and always is surrounded by controversies. Even during his cricketing life, he thought very highly of himself and fought with his team Captain. He left the team uninformed and flew back from England mid-tour. After his retirement as a cricketer and a few years into being a cricket commenter, Sidhu tried his luck in Politics and had a good run until his over-ambitious self drove him crazy. In a blind hope for the Punjab CM post, he went against his then party, BJP, quitting it to form a new political outfit. Later on, he merged the outfit in Congress and spewed venom against Captain Amarinder Singh, the one who gave him a renewed chance in politics.

Whatever infighting and verbal exchanges he had with his own party members, are still afresh in everyone’s mind. Keeping aside his political ambitions, he didn’t respect the country’s stand on Pakistan and had a cosy relationship with the then administration of the Islamist country led by Imran Khan. Sidhu, who was once considered a cricketing legend, lost all respect when he embraced Chief General Bajwa of the Pakistan Army.

It is disheartening to see how yet another man, who should have been a legend for India, succumbed to his arrogance and self-centred nature. It is a great shame that Navjot Singh Sidhu, the one who surrounded himself in laughter, had such a dark past. Out of his hunger for power, the true face of Sidhu was revealed many times, but this case of venting his anger on an innocent old man is beyond anybody’s moral comprehension. Moreover, this case emboldens the fact that Karma pays back and pays in compound interest. A man who used to live in his own paradise will now spend time locked away behind bars.
