Assam has a long border with Bangladesh and because of the socio-political unrest in the Islamic nation, the state has witnessed a mass influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. This influx has been continuing for several decades, additionally, the Rohingyas have been entering India through multiple routes. These illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya Muslim immigrants have led to a rise in criminal activities and strained the social fabric of society. For this very reason, it was paramount for the Assam government to adhere to the Zero-tolerance Policy against law-and-order violators.

Assam Government teaches a strict lesson to Hardline Islamists

The Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is a no-nonsense politician and a hard taskmaster. Whenever the Islamic radicals wanted to flare up the situation in the state, the Assam CM ordered the administration to come down hard on these miscreants. In a similar chain of events, the Assam administration has bulldozed the illegal structures of five families in Nagaon who were accused of torching a Police Station.

Special Director-General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said, “it emerged during investigation that a number of the suspects had encroached upon the land where they were settled or they managed to get land pattas with forged documents. He said a case was subsequently registered and the eviction drive carried out”.

The administration had to take these necessary steps as earlier, these Islamists had the gumption to torch the Batadrava Police Station in Assam. The mob alleged that a fish trader Safiqul Islam died in Police custody.

The DGP Singh further informed that seven persons were arrested while 14-15 others were under detention. A special investigation team is to be formed that will complete its probe within 45 days and submit a charge sheet in court within a stipulated time period of 60 days. Also, a forensic science team would visit the Police station and probe whether the attack had the involvement of petrol or kerosene-type fuel.

Himanta Biswa Sarma: Zero-tolerance for Radicalisation and Criminals

The development of Assam has witnessed a new fillip under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. This has not been an easy task and is not an overnight success. The Assam government has been cracking hard on the sleeper cells of terrorist organisations and made several arrests related to it. Further, to save young Muslim minds from the hardline Islamic radicalisation and to mainstream them, the government ended the government aid to Madrasas and converted them into general schools. The CM is also cracking down hard on illegal Muslim immigrants.

Bulldozer Model

After the advent of Yogi Adityanath in the top political office of Uttar Pradesh, the criminals are either wilfully surrendering or fleeing from the state to escape the fury of law. The criminals that were convicted through proper Judicial channels, continued to rule in their bastions through money and muscle power. Hence, this Bulldozer on illegal properties of criminals puts a break on their source of money. The Bulldozer model drastically improved the Law and Order in UP which motivated many states including Assam to replicate it. Interestingly, the opposition ruled Punjab, which criticises everything that the BJP does, has hailed the Bulldozer model.

Law without swords is nothing but words. For this very reason, it is paramount for every state to strictly enforce law and order within their states. Only then the government can enforce the Fundamental Rights enshrined in the constitution. Hence, this stringent punishment meted out to the Islamic mob will create deterrence and establish the supremacy of rule of law. Further, this Bulldozer model against evils of society has been a successful model to strictly enforce law and order in many states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Assam replicating it reflects that radical Islamists are counting their last days in the state.
