Rachna Banerjee won Miss Calcutta in 1990, while still in her second year of South City College’s graduate programme.
Before beginning her acting career, she competed in various beauty pageants and was frequently crowned ‘Miss Beautiful Smile.’ In 1992, she was unable to compete in the Miss India grand finals, where Madhu Sapre was proclaimed the winner.
Her celebrity led to her being cast in films, and Chidananda Dasgupta cast her in his second Bengali feature film, Amodini (1995). Banerjee’s breakthrough role was with director Sukhen Das, who gave her the name Rachana (which he discovered in the film ‘Rabindra Rachanabali’).
