Film Project Swatantra Veer Savarkar
After a watershed moment of revolution created by ‘The Kashmiri Files, another project on Veer Savarkar is on the way. Any guesses, who will play the titular role in the movie? It’s none other than Randeep Hooda, who is popular for his extraordinary acting skills and nationalistic approach. As per the sources, the film (Swatantra Veer Savarkar) will revisit the history to tell story of Veer Savarkar and his contribution in India’s fight for freedom.
“Savarkar is the most misunderstood hero”: Randeep Hooda
Randeep Hooda is all set to depict the story of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in this upcoming film project, Swatantra Veer Savarkar.
Soon after he was roped in for the movie, Hooda stated, “There are many heroes who have played their part in getting us our independence. However, not everyone has got their due. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated and influential among these unsung heroes.”
Helmed by Mahesh Manjrekar, the film will be produced by Sarabjit producer Sandeep Singh and Anand Pandit.
Speaking about the film, Mahesh Manjrekar added, “This is the right time to tell the stories which we had ignored. Swatantra Veer Savarkar will be an edgy cinematic narrative that will force us to revisit our history. I have been wanting to collaborate with Sandeep Singh, and I am glad that we are doing this film together.”
For those unversed, Randeep Hooda is an Indian film actor who is popular for his role in Rang Rasiya (2014) based on 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma and an innocent Indian farmer hanged for allegedly spying in Pakistan in Sarbjit (2016). He has also played prominent roles in Jannat 2, Sultan, Baaghi 2 and many more.
Earlier, when Supreme Court had ordered cinema halls across the nation to play national anthem before screening the movie, Hooda had stated that “If they play the National Anthem, it is your duty to stand up and rise to it. I don’t see any problem. I have never ever had the feeling that I can sit and relax when my country’s National Anthem is being played, I don’t think that is in good taste neither it is respectful.”
Veer Savarkar: a true nationalist and freedom fighter
Born on May 28, 1883, Veer Savarkar was a freedom fighter, politician, lawyer, writer and social reformer. Advocating the use of arms and force to achieve the mentioned cause like other great revolutionary leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and others, he was thus known to differ with Gandhi on the policy of India’s struggle for freedom. After facing resistance for long, finally, his work on the revolt of 1857 was published in Holland in 1909, under the title “The Indian War of Independence –1857”.
A proponent of Hindutva (Hinduness), Veer Savarkar also contributed greatly to bring in an ideological revolution within the Hindu society. Being a staunch supporter of the Hindu values, Veer Savarkar founded ‘the Hindu Mahasabha’ as a separate political organization.

The Hindu Mahasabha opposed the creation of Pakistan, and as expected opposed Gandhi’s continued Muslim appeasement stances. Nathuram Godse, a volunteer of the Hindu Mahasabha, assassinated Gandhi in 1948 and upheld his actions till his hanging. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was arrested and indicted by the Government of India in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case. But he was acquitted by the Supreme Court of India. Veer Savarkar died on February 26, 1966, at the age of 83.
Veer Savarkar united the Hindus under one flag and gave them an ideology that should inspire and guide them for generations to come. Kudos to the team of film project titled Swatantra Veer Savarkar for bringing such a nationalist hero to the limelight and giving him the respect he actually deserved.
