The polity of Bengal is full of bloodshed, vicious animosity and record political lows. CM Mamata Banerjee on a recent inhumane and barbaric case, where 8 people were burnt alive in Birbhum, has given a cold hearted response and trivialized it as an ordinary unfortunate case. Because of political mudslinging, apathy and inaction, only the Judiciary seems to be the last hope for Hindus in Bengal.
The New Political Low
Responding to the gruesome case, CM Mamata Banerjee compared it to any ordinary unfortunate case happening in other states as well.
As reported by TOI, the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee while in a state program said, “The government is ours, we are concerned about people in our state. We would never want anyone to suffer. The Birbhum, Rampurhat incident is unfortunate. I have immediately dismissed the OC, SDPO. I will go to Rampurhat tomorrow.”

The CM tried to downplay the state’s law and order failure and said that incidents like this are frequent in other states like UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat etc.
She said,” I am not justifying the incident in Rampurhat. We will take action in a fair manner.”

CM Mamata Banerjee has time and time again brushed all political violence against Hindus of Bengal under the carpet. She labels every such case as a “BJP conspiracy “or Fake News, an old case or a Suicide or a family feud. In this case also she, contrary to her name, which means kindness/affection, has shown no empathy or compassion for the victims and deceased and tried to trivialize it as routine cases in Bihar, UP, Gujarat etc.
The Political Exchanges Still ON
The politics never stops, not even in cases like the Birbhum, where a family along with kids were torched alive. The blame game is ON. The opposition is blaming the government, the ruling party in return accuses the opposition of conspiring to malign the government and no good comes out of it for victims of political violence.
The Leader of Opposition and BJP want the CM to resign and suggest the Centre to impose President’s Rule while Congress State Chief Adhir Ranjan has written to the President to invoke Article 355 of the constitution.

The exchange between CM and Governor has escalated and each accuses others’ statements of political overtone. She even has called him “Laatsahab”.
Centre’s Weak Response against Lawless Mamata’s Bengal
PM Modi too made a statement hoping that the state government would bring justice to everyone and extended full support of the Centre to punish culprits of this heinous case.

The MHA earlier had sought a report from the state on the Birbhum incident within 72 hours. But for many independent political experts the Centre’s inaction may seem to be in their head tied up, to avoid being called Fascists, Communal, Anti-Bengali, against Federal structure and what not.

Calcutta High Court, the only savior
The Calcutta HC took suo-motu petition and some PILs and gave clear directions that the crime scene should be monitored closely till further orders and install CCTV cameras at the site in the presence of district judge Purba Bardhaman. The court also directed CFSL Delhi to collect all forensic materials from the crime scene.

The Calcutta HC earlier also provided some relief to the victims of post poll political violence and had ordered a CBI probe to look into all allegations.
In a democratic country all 4 pillars of the democracy have their role to play but when the three pillars fail simultaneously, the citizens hope and pray that the Judiciary will rise to the occasion in such a crisis time and ‘Justice’, ‘Safety’ and ‘a dignified life’ to everyone will be ensured by the judiciary.
The author has high hopes.
