Education and Early life
After graduating from University College Thiruvananthapuram, he went to Tamil Nadu’s M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, where he worked as an advert editor. He went on to edit documentaries and short films before breaking into the film industry with Rathri Mazha, a Malayalam film that received five Kerala State Film Awards.

Mahesh delved into writing after establishing himself as an adept and successful editor, and made his debut as a writer with the 2015 Malayalam film Mili, which premiered to excellent reviews in Kerala.
Mahesh Narayanan made his directorial debut in 2017, directing Take Off, a 2017 Indian drama thriller film based on the ordeal of Indian nurses in Tikrit, Iraq, in 2014. Parvathy Thiruvothu, Kunchacko Boban, and Fahadh Faasil starred in the key parts. Mahesh Narayanan and P. V. Shajikumar wrote it. The movie was shot in several locations in Dubai and Kerala.
On March 24, 2017, Take Off was released. The film was a box office smash, grossing over 40 crore and playing in theaters for over 125 days. Several international film festivals, including the International Film Festival of India and the International Film Festival of Kerala, screened the film in competition.
At India’s 48th International Film Festival, the film received a Special Jury Award. The film received five Kerala State Awards, including Mahesh Narayanan’s Best Debut Director Award.
Mahesh Narayanan revealed in June 2020 that his next project would be an experimental film called C U Soon, starring Fahadh Faasil. The film, according to Mahesh, was more of a tiny exercise using an iPhone than a feature film.
It was also announced that the film would be 60–65 minutes long (the final running time was 1h 38 minutes) and would be shot in Faasil’s flat. The Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) was against the filming due to the disruptions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the approval of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). Despite this, filming on the 21st of August was finished smoothly.
The film earned positive reviews from critics after its OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video. It’s the country’s first computer-generated film. At the 42nd Moscow International Film Festival, C U Soon was screened in the screen-life category.
