The results of Manipur elections are out before the election

Manipur BJP Congress Party Amo

Nearing the assembly elections in five states, the political parties are leaving no stone unturned to sweep the respective states. Manipur is one of the states that will be witnessing the electoral atmosphere very soon. However, BJP seems to be fighting tooth and nail to ensure a massive victory in the state.

Is Congress already losing the elections?

In a major blow to the Congress in Manipur, senior party MLA Dr Chaltonlien Amo jumped ships to join the BJP on Sunday.

The surprising development comes a few days after another senior Congress MLA D Korungthang defected from the aged-old party to join the Naga People’s Front (NPF).

Soon after MLA Amo defected to BJP, the MPCC has issued an order stating that “Dr Chaltonlien Amo ceased to be a primary member of the party with immediate effect as part of disciplinary action.”

For the unversed, Dr Chaltonlien Amo was the vice president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and a prominent MLA of Tipaimukh.

BJP welcomed Amo at the office in Imphal with a reception party. During the celebration, Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav, who is also the party in charge of Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP Manipur president A Sharda Devi, among others were present.

As per the reports, Manipur, for its 60 seats, will go to poll in two phases on February 27 and March 3. While in the first phase, elections will be held for as many as 38 constituencies, the remaining 22 constituencies will vote in the second phase.

Congress losing North-east

All northeastern states have witnessed a lot of political change in the last few years, apart from Manipur, even Assam has lately witnessed a lot of powerful figures resign from the Congress party and join the BJP. The Congress rule ended in Assam when the current Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, defected to the BJP in 2016 and created history.

Congress dynastic politics finally seems to be coming to an end in the Northeast. Former Manipur Congress chief Govindas Konthoujam had also joined the BJP in August 2021. The list of Congress leaders joining the BJP has significantly increased in the last few months. The way things are unfolding, Congress is likely to lose the elections.

Given the party is very much committed to the development of the Northeast in general and Manipur in specific, BJP will supposedly encash a vast number of votes to sweep the state.
