The Champions League Twenty20, popularly known as the CLT20, was an annual international Twenty20 cricket competition that pitted the best domestic teams from major cricketing nations against one another. The tournament began in 2008, with the first edition taking place in October of that year. It was chaired by N. Srinivasan, who was also the chairman of the ICC, and was jointly owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa. Sundar Raman served as the CLT20’s and IPL’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Chennai Super Kings were the most recent winners, having won their second title in 2014.
The event was conducted in either India or South Africa between September and October for two to three weeks. It had a total prize pool of US$6 million, with the victorious team taking home $2.5 million, the largest reward fund ever for a club cricket competition. The format included the best teams from eight Test-playing nations’ premier Twenty20 championships, with India, Australia, and South Africa favored.

Background
As a result of a long-term fall in the popularity of county championship and domestic limited-overs cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board introduced Twenty20 cricket in 2003 with the Twenty20 Cup. The format was created to attract a younger audience and increase attendance by reducing matches to roughly three hours. Domestic Twenty20 events began to emerge as cricketing nations began to adopt the concept.
The establishment of international Twenty20 events followed. An early effort at an international Twenty20 club tournament was the International 20:20 Club Championship. It took place in 2005 and included three domestic Twenty20 teams from three different countries.

Format of CLT20
Despite the fact that each edition had a different format and a varied number of teams, they all had a group stage and a two-round knockout stage. In 2011, a qualifying round was added, limiting direct entries to teams from India, South Africa, and Australia. A $500, 000 participation fee is paid to each team (including qualifying stage players). The entire prize pool for each tournament was $6 million.
Each side names a 15-player squad prior to the start of the event. For their domestic tournament, all players must be contracted by the team. Each team can feature a maximum of four international players, similar to the IPL rule.

Most other tournaments have a lower limit on both contracted international players and the number of players who can participate in their matches. In 2011, an exception to the rule was given for the Mumbai Indians, who had a squad of seven Indian players due to player availability and would have been unable to put together an eleven-member playing side if another was injured. Mumbai won the CLT20 that year, and they were entitled to feature five international players.
